Tolerate the tolerant, but not the intolerant. This feels like a 1960’s mantra, but look how tolerant we’ve become in 50 years, at least internally.

Haha, News Flash: Mmm, never mind.

[…]they were apparently used to temporarily ban @popebeanie as well.

Twas but a scratch. Please don’t give up, Dr. Bob. 😉

I was amused when checking the Guidelines again that 2+ years later they were still written with me in mind.  Complete with the reference to that one cartoon I contributed over on TA to the thread asking for mocking cartoons 😉 .  I thought it fit with the theme, in a reverse tongue-in-cheek sort of way.   Apparently it was “hate speech”.

We academic types are quite firm about academic freedom and get our dander up when people start labeling commentary with which they disagree as “hate speech” in order to enact bans on whatever ideas the current establishment would like to suppress.  We’re even more sensitive in the U.S. these days in light of the active efforts to ban climate change research reporting or discussion as “fake news” or “anti-American”.  ‘Tis the sort of thing one should never collaborate with if one cares about the truth.

At the same time, I recognize the real reason for writing the Guidelines that way was a desire to run me off along in the hopes of having a more private, insular group.  I understand having spaces like that are worthwhile.  Freedom or not, I’m not sure I’d be OK with having @Reg join a Catholic mass and loudly offer running commentary ;-).  Well, I might find it amusing but not as an ongoing feature.

I’ve no intention of being a “dick” in that sort of way as @strega puts it.

So I think you all need to take a look at those Guidelines compared to the old TA ones and decide what it is you really want in this space.   If empirical data means anything, take a look at the longest threads over on TA.  I bet you’ll find that more of the community engaged when “alternate” ideas were being proposed by some of us guests (though honestly I was cheering for y’all at times).  Perhaps there are a subset of forums that you consider your “Holy Mass” where other commentary isn’t welcome or appropriate?

I’ll lurk for a bit since it’s the start of the semester and I don’t have anything to grade yet (and because none of us have any idea what’s going to happen to science grant funding in the U.S. in the next month or two).  You all decide.

Dont go Bob. We need each and every opinion. Pushing the envelope is more than ok with me and I am personally for very few limits on our expression of speech.

I wouldn’t worry about it, Dr Bob.  The times when *someone* will jump down *your* throat, and sing an extravagent hymn of criticism from the rooftops, just for opening your mouth, are hopefully all over.

Actually, I think that more steps should have been taken in the past to protect you from this kind of behaviour.  In fact, we should all have taken more steps.  It was kind of horrible to see.

Thank you Simon for your indirect attack. That was horrible to read, especially since I’ve always respected you and never publicly complained about some of the things you do (even when for me some of your replies were exasperating). Why would I do that? There are many things that rub some users the wrong way. Have you broken the rules? No. Has Dr Bob? Multiple times. You may be happy to let him get away with his concern trolling and self-feed trolling and crybaby-trolling and his atheist-hater-trolling. I and other users absolutely do not. When a theist comes and pokes you and then runs away…it is horrid for some users. It makes the environment here feel atheist-unsafe. Think about the users who come here to get away from that kind of trolling in real life. You may not see anything wrong with that. Other users do not. If you see a user posting messages or responses that breaks the rules…join in and say so. What stopped you?

I was planning on taking a longer break but you have inspired me to come back Simon.

This is the third time Dr. Bob has threatened to leave. The first time, Dr. Bob wrongfuly accused me of deleting his post and left in a rage-quit. The second time…a mod pointed out he was breaking the rules. Another rage-quit. The third time now…its over policies he thinks gets in the way of his concern trolling, self-feeding- trolling, and cry-baby-trolling.

Dr. Bob, if you followed up with users when they critique your claims (some of which are very hostile and aggressive to atheists, this website etc) then you’d find replies here with the same patience and thoughtfulness as other theists get when they do engage (take Michael for example). You know what I mean…it doesn’t need to be repeated.  Please don’t mistake “unquestionable facts” with commenting and running away and please don’t confuse empirical facts with “refusing to back them up”.

It’s always a delight when a theist user comes here and fully engages with users who have the courtesy to follow through with their claims (especially the provocative ones) without evading the matter or running off or repeating claims that have already thoroughly been dealt with multiple times. There is no reason why we cannot have novel interesting constructive conversations. It would be utterly delightful to have another theist around like that again. Seriously.

    Do you?

    @davis – “atheist-unsafe

    – Jesus shit in a fishtank.  Since when is Atheist Zone populated by snowflakes?

Please can you stop dancing on Dr Bob’s face, every time he shows it?  I don’t get why you do it.  It’s like you’re in love with him or something.  Admit it.

We don’t care what Dr Bob does.  He doesn’t do “anything”.  He’s like your twinkly old uncle.  I for one don’t want to see you kick the shit out of him all the time.

Simon….you are right. I am insanely in love with Dr. Bob. I dream of going to an expensive French restaurant with him. He will order for both of us, I love it when they do that…and if I’m lucky, after several succulent savory dishes, I will get  some dessert, hopefully a cream filled eclair. I guess I’ll just have to focus on Reg. Maybe if I’m nice and sweet…he will take me out for bangers and mash in a fancy Dublin Irish pub and afterwards show me all the beautiful hidden places in Dublin?

Thanks umar. Do you think there might be a way to create a button on the edit toolbar to make it easier to embed a file? I’d think it would be easy to implement with wordpress (though I’m not sure). Cheers
