Here’s an interesting retrospective regarding John Boswell’s contention that the Catholic Church was not actively homophobic for a few centuries after its founding, and same-sex marriages were performed in the early church. I remember when this first came out in 1980. people were shocked. Boswell died of AIDS shortly after the publication. It’s an interesting article, summarizes the controversy and Boswell’s scholarship nicely.
