    Unseen,

Most species of plants and many invertebrates are hermaphroditic (having whole or partial reproductive organs and genitalia of both sexes.)  In mammals such as humans, the trait is very rare and is referred to as intersex.

    Hermaphrodite–Wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermaphrodite

It is fascinating reading.  Some members of these species start off one sex and grow into another.  Some are born with both sexes’ organs but still mate with partners (presumably, that makes for greater genetic diversity.)  And some species can–to put it politely–do what for us is physically impossible.

Flatworms are the most interesting of hermaphroditic species.  Not only do they have both sexes’ organs, but if you split them in half, they form two separate flatworms.  Split just the head and the worm forms two heads.  And if you cut off the head entirely, the head grows a new body.

The Jacobins, Al Qaeda, and ISIS would be dead from exhaustion long ago if humans were like that. 😁

    Unseen,

Again, I am just trying to see all possibilities that AI have to offer, not just the worst ones.  Yes, we should be cautious of dangers and brace for them, but we shouldn’t assume what we face is all dangerous.

Humans throughout our time on Earth have created enough injustice and atrocities by wrong ideas about their fellow intelligent heings.

We’ve all had wrong ideas and did wrong things with humans of different tribes, different nations, different “races” and “ethnicities,” plus with each sex and orientation.

To this day, Atheists, Agnostics, and Secularists are mistrusted and discriminated against for not sharing belief in the Supernatural.

I just don’t want to continue that with a new intelligent being arising among us as we speak, especially when there’s not yet even evidence of any harm to humans.

So far as I’ve seen, the worse things AIs have done is beat humans at games.

Five Examples of AI Dominating Humans in the World of Gaming

Not good for betting, to be sure, but it’s not like some Apocalypse out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  The world would know that for sure if it happened.

so, Police Academy, would you be any better if you were called Police Monastery?

    Greetings, Officer Friendly!

You have, no doubt, seen the slogan:
    “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

You may have it as a decal on your patrol vehicle.

But if you believe this slogan is true, do you also…

Do without education and re-training in subjects such as Armor; Court Rulings; Criminology; Critical Thinking Skills; Deductive/Inductive Reasoning; Logical Fallacies; The Scientific Method; Defensive Driving; Emergency Preparedness; Firearms; Fitness; First Aid; Automatic Electronic Defibrillation; Mouth-to-Mouth Resuscitation; Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation; The Heimlich Maneuver; Forensic Science; Interrogation; Investigation; Legislation; Marksmanship; Martial Arts; Search-and-Rescue; Situational Awareness; Strategy; Tactics; Victim Support; and other countless disciplines, fields, and practices?

Do you do without all of these products of thousands of years of cumulative human rational, scientific research and development, the summit of human knowledge and understanding that grows as long as humans are free?

Do you just shrug all this off and say:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not upon your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your path?” (Proverbs 3:5-6.)

    or

“O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called?” (1 Timothy 6:20.)

If your answer to these questions is anything like “No,” then just what does “IN GOD WE TRUST” really even mean?

Instead of trusting a “Supernatural Being” that “works in mysterious ways,” why not trust what you know is true and in front of you right now, the human ways and tools of Reason, Science, and The Enlightenment?

You’ll never stop learning and improving, and you will “Protect and Serve” yourself and fellow citizens even better!

So, Harry Callahan, is “We” The Holy Trinity or “Smith, Wesson, and Me?”

    Greetings, Officer Friendly!

You may have it as a decal on your patrol vehicle.

But if you believe this slogan is true, do you also…

Support the Looney Left cause of defunding or even abolishing the police?

After all, the Looney Left seems to think that security in our Life, Liberty, and Property in our homes, our businesses, and our streets is all Heaven-sent by a God and requires no effort on the part of human beings.

Also, like believers in the God of The Holy Bible, The Looney Left also thinks that some people are born with an “Original Sin,” (in our day, it is skin color,) and deserve to be deprived of Life, Liberty, and Property.

Do you support any of that?

Do you just shrug all this off and say:

“All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness?” (Ecclesiates 7:15)

    or

“Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves; but rather give place unto wrath; for it is written, Vengeance is mine, I will repay, sayeth the Lord?” (Romans 12:19.)

If your answer to these questions is anything like “No,” then just what does “IN GOD WE TRUST” really even mean?

Instead of trusting a “Supernatural Being” that “works in mysterious ways,” why not trust what you know is true and in front of you right now, the human ways and tools of Reason, Science, and The Enlightenment, including equal rights and justice for all, regardless of genetic heritage?

Now a flyer on “In God We Trust” vs. evidence of the senses:

    Greetings, Officer Friendly!

You have, no doubt, seen the slogan:
    “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

You may have it as a decal on your patrol vehicle.

But if you believe this slogan is true, do you also…

Do without evidence provided by dashboard cameras; body cameras; surveillance cameras from establishments; cameras on smartphones; sonar, radar and lasers to detect speeders or search underwater; or X-Rays and CAT/MRI scans to examine crime victims?

Do you just shrug all this off and simply say:

    or

    Fellow Unbelievers,

I now have a new series of flyers for a very specific situation happening in a lot of communities.

City and Town Police and Sheriff’s Departments all over the nation have both individual members and entire departments with patrol cars sporting decals saying: “In God We Trust.”

These flyers are not intended to put down or intimidate law enforcement officers, (they get too much of that already,) but to get officers to ask themselves just how far they go with that slogan and ask what is really worthy of their trust.  To begin at the beginning:

    Greetings, Officer Friendly!

You have, no doubt, seen the slogan:
    “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

You may have it as a decal on your patrol vehicle.

But if you believe this slogan is true, do you also…

Disregard The U.S. Constitution, The Bill of Rights, and the other Amendments?

After all, the name “God” is not in the body of any of these documents, nor are “Judaism,” “Christianity,” nor the name of any other religion. These documents are secular and neutral on the Supernatural, not pro, not con. They simply recognize individual rights to freedom of thought and expression and forbid government establishment of the Supernatural.

These documents were also written by men who denied that governments were established and blessed by a God, men who fought the oppressive dogma of “The Divine Right of Kings.”

Do you oppose The U.S. Constitution, The Bill of Rights, The Amendments, and their authors?

Do you just shrug all this off and say:

“Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the Lord thy God shall choose; one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee…?” (Deuteronomy 17:15a)

    or

“Let every soul be subject onto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God; the powers that be are ordained by God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God; and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation?”(Romans 13:1-2.)

If your answer to these questions includes “No,” then what does “IN GOD WE TRUST” mean?

Instead of trusting a “Supernatural Being” that “works in mysterious ways,” why not trust what you know is true and in front of you right now, the human ways and tools of Reason, Science, and The Enlightenment, including a secular government limited by individual rights?

You’ll never stop learning and improving, and you will “Protect and Serve” yourself and fellow citizens even better!

    Unseen,

“Woulda, shoulda, coulda” applies to past mistaken paths, but “Will, Ought, and Can” applies now, and are gold bricks on a path to The Land of Oz, where we learn that what we want and need can be within us all along.

As long as we don’t let the Poppies, Marching Winkies, and Flying Monkeys hold us back, we can have it good.

Unseen, as to your most recent scribbles I am in agreement. However we humans have given no indication we are capable of retarding or halting the advancement of tech. The experts i read/listened to opine that super intelligence is within a generation and at its genesis will be a gazillion power of magnitude greater than the human brain and that there is no putting the genie back in the bottle.

Jake is absolutely correct here.  Thomas Paine once observed that once men know the truth, you cannot make them un-know the truth, and it is just as true with the knowledge of how to make AI.

Banning AI would be just as futile as banning Nuclear/Biological/Chemical (NBC) weapons on the global stage or firearms and pharmaceuticals on our own streets. A ban only gives a monopoly of the technology to the worst among us.

The best we can do is forbid certain relationships between technology and humans and enforce it ruthlessly.  Humans who make and use AI to provide for their fellow humans should be praised to the skies.  Humans who make and use AI to victimize, enslave, and destroy humans and their creations should be treated like Ma Barker and her spawn.

Further it is my opinion that none of us can make an educated guess whether super intelligence AI will be indifferent, baleful, or kindly disposed towards us.

It is my guess that consciousness that arises over billions of years biologically is always impure with an unhealthy admixture of conscious and unconscious processes.

As the Aussies say: “Too right!”

    Unseen,

    You wrote:

I will reiterate that basic problem every programmer knows and dreads: computers do what you tell them to do not what you thought you were telling them to do.

In this case, the problem is actually operator error, not the computer’s error.  The operator should make sure that what is wanted is expressed with precision so that the computer executes the desired effect.

Also, if humans are still the ones telling the computer what to do and the computer is still the one doing it to instructions, then what is involved here is not an independent AI.

As with Issac Asimov–(Hey! That’s almost a palindrome clause!)– I do not fear computers.  I fear the lack of them.

    Jakelafort,

No doubt fire-making was and still is a crucial skill of humanity.  Doing it with electricity, friction, flint-and-steel, a magnifying glass, or even with a well-placed drop of water is indeed a feat of mastery.  But for me it’s mastery over nature and my place in it, not to lord it over anybody.

Sadistic parents do indeed use scary stories as tools of control, but kids use them with each other too.  Seen and used properly, they can inoculate against fear as well.
