PLEASE ignore the title of the video. It turns out that Paglia’s speech, from about :40 on, is a paean on the extended family and a sharp critique of the “prison” that is the so-called “nuclear family.”
There was a time, not so terribly long ago, when families were extended and either lived several generations together in a large house or near to each other. You knew your neighbors. Getting childcare was simply a matter of asking your or your partner’s mom if she’d watch the kids, or if they couldn’t, a neighbor would do it.
Things are different today, but are we better off?
Paglia is obviously not everyone’s cup of tea. She’s brilliant, but she’s also hyperactive and tends to monopolize conversations. At the same time, she’s almost always interesting.

I love Camille Paglia. I might not agree with everything she says, but I love the way she thinks. Have you seen her article, “Junk Bonds and Corporate Raiders” ?
It’s true, humans are cooperative breeders. By nature, we look after each other’s kids. That’s how we can have more than one at a time – mothers share the burden with others.
If you look at a human baby – it loves to interact with all and sundry. Its face is wide open and sunnily inviting of interaction. An ape baby will cling to its mother until it’s weaned, and she won’t give it up to anybody unless as a favour. Apes only have one baby at a time.
I do think that a nuclear family can be toxic, but only if one (or both) parent(s) is unsatisfactory. In this case, the kid(s) have nowhere to run to. An outside influence like a grandma may provide some refuge from some evil witch/dark lord in the home.
