It’s true: The criminal justice and family law system needs a massive overhaul. I’m currently getting my masters in Psychology with an emphasis in Forensic Psychology….I am passionate about these issues.

It really just comes down to people (regardless of their gender) who are victims of abuse have a higher rate of repeating the cycle in some way. A catalyst big enough has to happen to change a person (or to make them want to change themselves). For many people that change doesn’t occur. But it does happen.

The change occurred for me, with the culmination of a few things:

    1. Caught her holding a knife while watching me sleep.

    2. When she threatened to dial 911 because I wouldn’t bend to her will, and I reminded her that we’d BOTH go to jail and our son would go to foster care if she did, due to probation, she said, “I don’t give a fuck.”

    3. I realized that she wasn’t acknowledging her issues or doing anything about them, so this was only going to get worse.

It changed for me when I got out, almost ending up homeless, and then decided to begin addressing my Codependent nature so that I’d not again fall into another trap like this.

The system definitely needs fixing, but I doubt that will happen, as it’s too big of a cash cow for anyone to make any real change. Men will continue to be demonized, and women infantilized, in the name of profits, under the banner of “protecting women.”
