For many decades, the GOP whined about an “activist” Supreme Court. Until now, when that is exactly what they have in their pocket.
Today’s immunity decision is a giant step toward the imperial presidency they want a conservative President to have.
The next President will have unparalleled power to interfere in national affairs unbound by almost anything. The President can ignore the law and the courts, even including the Supreme Court with impunity. If the Supreme Court rules against him and he deems it in the national interest, he can even padlock the Supreme Court and even lock up Justices and there will be no effective repeal.
That Project 2025 would be implemented it Trump is elected is a foregone conclusion, bringing an end to Civil Service, decision making by experts, and agencies being run by special interest advocates instead.
The President can rule by fiat, totally untrammeled. It will be, effectively, the end of American democracy, not just as we know it, but as even deserving the name and designation.
Gone will be the Shining City on the Hill in favor or The Man in the High Castle.
If a Democrat is elected, the Supreme Court needs to be modified drastically.
It will set a bad precedent, to be sure, but what choice have we, all things considered?
