UnseenParticipantffWe are already living with unprecedented peacetime levels of message control from the Federal level, often done in concert with blindly cooperative social media. Bad enough, but it could get much worse if the RESTRICT act passes. Jimmy Dore explains that a bill purportedly designed to control Tik Tok could be used to restrict anything the government doesn’t like:
It’s not just Jimmy Dore:
The bill is so vaguely worded that it’s a tool any administration could use to smother dissent and discussion of just about anything. It’s about government control.

UnseenParticipantBTW, the overall lack of appropriate coverage and lack of alarm over this bill just underlines what’s wrong with the mainstream media nowadays. The NY Times, Washington Post, the network news departments, and even major online news sources seem to be pretending there’s nothing to see here. They’ve become governmental lapdogs.
Just imagine if this bill passes and it would be in the hands of Donald Trump.

jakelafortParticipantIf it is curbing speech obviously it has amendment 1 challenge. Also if it is really vague and applies to criminal law it is unconstitutional.

a) National security is a tool often used to justify restrictions on free speech (yelling ‘fire’ yada yada); 2) we have a very conservative Supreme Court.

TheEncogitationerParticipantUnseen,
RESTRICT is not anti-Democracy if the brainless Mob or their elected Representatives support it. And that holds true whether the Democratic majority is 99 versus 1 or 50 ÷ 1 versus 49.
To be precise, RESTRICT is anti-Constitutional Republic and anti-Individual Rights as recognized by The Bill of Rights.
While I am suspicious of using TikTok and still think it’s Greasy Kid’s Stuff as an information source, Individual Rights still include the right to use Greasy Kid’s Stuff in any way that respects the same rights of other individuals.
To get over this fawning over Democracy that everyone does, here is some nice, happy, snuggly reading for an isolated parking space with the motor running, for an upstairs apartment wjth multiple locks, or for a quiet camping trip alone in the woods:

_Robert_ParticipantMaybe if the Chinese weren’t launching 1000’s of weekly cyber-attacks they would have a better case. The US is not their only target.
India imposed a nationwide ban on TikTok and dozens of other Chinese apps like messaging app WeChat in 2020 over privacy and security concerns. The ban came shortly after a clash between Indian and Chinese troops at a disputed Himalayan border killed 20 Indian soldiers and injured dozens. The companies were given a chance to respond to questions on privacy and security requirements but the ban was made permanent in January 2021.
Every major company has carried the story, so not sure where you are looking. There is a wiki page about it.

The legislation in the US is Bi partisan, btw. The issue at hand is that TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, is required by Chinese law to make the app’s data available to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Fuck that.

TheEncogitationerParticipantRobert and Fellow Unbelievers,
If the concern is National Security threats from Red China–and I agree Red China is indeed one of our many threats from abroad–then our Government needs to let private individuals, organizations and businesses have encryption aand data security at least as strong as the Military. A high-bit string encryption key is as necessary for protection as a Colt .45.
The Government also needs to get Rid of The USA PATRIOT Act as well, since it makes U.S. Citizens subject to warrantless, unknown surveillance by Government officials who may also be foreign infiltrators or compromised by foreign infiltrators. The list of those found since 9/11 is mind-blowing: Sargent Muhammed, Muslim Chaplain James Yee, The Fort Hood mass murderers, Congressman Eric Swallwell’s Chinese spy lover Fang Fang…
And above all, with as many threats from abroad as the U.S. faces, there should be no talk whatsoever of a “pause” by the U.S. in developing Artificial Intelligence (AI.)
If we ban ourselves from developing AI, Red China, Russia, Iran, and Saudi Arabia will all want to develop AI and what they program it to do will not be good at all for freedom or prosperity! ChatGPT will be replaced with NoChatPLA from Red China, NoChatFSO from Russia, NoChatIRG from Iran, and NoChatMutawa from Saudi Arabia.
In other words, Government should get out of the way of Citizens finding and producing better ways of protecting themselves.

Obviously, I’m using “democracy” and “democratic” in a broader sense than our rendition of it here in the U.S.
And, please, I wish people would stop pulling ye olde “we aren’t a democracy, we’re a republic” tricke. We’re not uneducated idiots. We know that. Sheesh. A republic is how one does democracy on a national scale where doing a classic Greek-style democracy is impractical.

One of the main problems with the RESTRICT legislation is its generality. It would be much less controversial if it weren’t virtually limitless in application. A RESTRICT Foreign Apps kind of law would be far less scary.

UnseenParticipantOne solution to the Tik Tok CCCP problem would be to flood it with bot-generated fake accounts with bogus info designed to confound the Commies. Eh? Disinformation IOW.
