The SAV site is a tragic comedy. It only adds to my pessimism about our future.

Are those anti-vaxxers simply stupid? Ineducable? Irrational? Would twelve years of public education in critical thinking have barred the path they have taken? I am guessing it would have dissuaded at least a strong minority. The fact that atheists, humanists and agnostics are less prone to the trap suggests that training in thinking might help.

Recently a cousin i had not known discovered me through an ancestry program. Turns out she is an antivaxxer and conspiracy nut. I tried to reason with her but alienated her very quickly. And then i promised not to criticize her if only she would divulge her juicy conspiracy thinking. Give me details! She did not do that but she shared how her experience in western medicine had made her suspicious of vaccines. It was not completely rational but it was an emotional reaction i think that set her down a bad path. Or maybe it is a combination of stupidity and emotion after some bad encounters with doctors.

It is funny how even with the evidence smashing them in the face and buffeting them along the rock strewn shore of reality that most of em don’t budge.
