The Han sailor Chen Di, in his Record of the Eastern Seas (1603), identifies the indigenous people of Taiwan as simply “Eastern Savages” (東番; Dongfan), while the Dutch referred to Taiwan’s original inhabitants as “Indians” or “blacks”, based on their prior colonial experience in what is currently Indonesia. When we face the real atrocities of colonialism and we teach it to the world it becomes a problem and yet the problem was not caused by the Indigenous nations it was our invaders from Europe, the real Savages.
