It’s come out that the shooter used a drone to check out the site of Trump’s rally, and then he used the intel he gathered to select a spot to do his “suicide by cop” mission* from.
Lately, I’ve seen some Youtube videos showing how effective the Ukrainian freedom fighters have been using drones to kill Russian soldiers and destroy Russian tanks, troop carriers, field headquarters, and other assets. And they do it using rather cheap over-the-counter drones fitted with grenades and a variety of other explosive devices.
It has me thinking that Trump’s attacker could have been successful had he copied what the Ukrainians are doing. Don’t misread me: I don’t want to live in a country where assassinations are any sort of regular feature of our politics.
Rather, I’m saying that the day will come, probably soon, that an assassination is carried out by a drone rather than a rifle. And when that happens, and if there is no defense against them (and I don’t think there is at the moment), that will be the end of mass outdoor rallies.
* I don’t view the attempt on Trump’s life as an attempted political assassination because as more and more information comes out, he looks more like the Columbine or Vegas concert shooters, who wanted to die, than John Wilkes Booth or Lee Harvey Oswald who tried to escape.

One advantage of assassination by drone is that, as in Ukraine, the drone operator can be rather far away from the target, whereas a moderately good marksman with a suitable weapon has to be within a few hundred feet.
