I have a work colleague who was the son of evangelical missionaries. I brought up the subject of religion on a long drive we were making to a client.  I can’t tell you how delighted I was to discover that at the age of 14, he thought about what Jerry Falwell had preached and decided it was all too contradictory. He told his father he was done with it.
He says he is spiritual- he and his wife tie their little problem lists to candle balloons and send them burning into the sky at the new year. Â Rather sweet, I thought.
Then he hit me with his bombshell. I shall quote him in full…
”Religion is just fossilized spirituality”
Isn’t that delightful?
