I remember Oct 17 1989, as the day a big quake, the “Loma Prieta” hit the SF Bay Area. I saw ripples move through the pavement of a parking lot, about 25 miles north of SF. Yet I’m still not prepared well enough for the next big one.

    • So, assuming you’re still staying in California, why not prepare?

Do you have a big enough table in your home to get under if the roof collapses? Do you have a folding shovel, an axe, and a crow bar for extrusion from rubble?

Do you have a First Aid Kit complete with bandages and medicines for all kinds of wounds, plus and an updated First Aid manual?

Do you have a tent for outdoor shelter?

Do you have bottled water or know how to drain the hot water heater?

Do you have water filtration and water purification pills and a camp stove for water from lakes and streams?

Do have ready-to-eat canned or packaged foods in a cool, dry, safe storage place where they won’t fall on anyone’s head or trip up someone on the floor? (You don’t need expensive questionable food buckets from the Late Jim Bakker or the Late-audienced Glenn Beck. Normal non-perishable foods you know and love will do..)

Do you have a portable radio with plenty of batteries or a hand-cranked spring-powered generator?

Do you have a whistle and flashlight to signal rescue crews for help from under wreckage without exhausting your voice?

Do you have a rechargable battery pack and compatible charging cable for your smartphone and pad or laptop? Do you have a portable WiFi connection device?

Do you have a chemical based camp potty for waste disposal in the event of broken sewer systems?

Do you have cleaning supplies and tools for clean-up and restoration?

Do you have a hard-copy map of multiple routes of escape?

Do you keep a full gas tank, have regular auto maintenance, a spare tire, and car tools?

Do you have the means of self-defense for would-be looters and predators?

Do you have survival manuals, as well as books and media to keep your mind active and entertained?

Do you have a list of friends, family, and a network of support? A safe for vital documents and spare cash and valuables?

All these and more will come in handy and above all, a prepared mindset.

Whether you stay or leave, I hope you stay alive, well, and free!
