Of the gazillion reasons, the most vivid one is an obscene purple pamphlet titled The Way of the Cross that was prayers especially for lent. The line that’s indelibly etched into my brain is I will scorch, scathe and punish myself in this world that I may be happy in the next. Long about sixth or seventh grade it occurred to me that this was utter bullshit.
