UnseenParticipantHow about some interesting, wonderful, weird, or wild covers of someone else’s song. And not ones everyone should know, like Jimi Hendrix’ cover of Dylan’s All Along the Watchtower. I’ll start with Larkin Poe’s country and western-ish cover of Massive Attack’s trip hoppy tune, Teardrop. Teardrop was the song used as the opening theme to the House TV series. I’ll start with a Massive Attack performance followed by Larkin Poe.
This is an almost ancient recording from early in LP’s career. It’s 14 years old, but even back then it was clear they were headed for the top (they have a Best Blues Album Grammy). They are gorgeous women now but back then they were very pretty girls.

Simon PayntonParticipantI really like this version of Chaka Khan’s “Ain’t nobody” by Jasmine Thompson.

Nice, but for some people (like me) who don’t know the original, it’s not a cover, it’s an original. So, let’s also include the original it’s a cover of. I’ll do it for you here:

UnseenParticipantDonna Summer’s biggest hit was probably I Feel Love, which had an early electronic music background supplied by Giorgio Moroder. The Irish band Ham Sandwich used to perform this song live and it was also on one of their albums. I’m showing a live version. It is about as far from Giorgio Moroder as it’s possible to get. The original follows. If you don’t know the original or want to refresh your memory, you might want to play that one first.
Donna Summer’s version probably qualifies as early EDM (electronic dance music). Ham Sandwich’s version might be called chamber rock despite the acoustic accompaniment.

Reg the Fronkey FarmerModeratorI think I might have posted this in a previous post but it is one of the best covers (imo).

It was recently voted “top electronic single” in a poll, I can’t remember the magazine that ran it.

It’s got an irresistible groove, that’s for sure.

UnseenParticipantWhile I put this one up in the thread about The Warning, it didn’t include the original for comparison, so here is The Warning’s version which is not a cover at all. Instead, they deconstructed the song and put it back together differently, including a noticeable tempo change. First, The Warning, then the Metallica version.

For many music lovers, the Disturbed version is now the standard version. He takes this classic to a whole new level.

UnseenParticipantHow about Jimi Hendrix’ Purple Haze string quartet style?

Reg the Fronkey FarmerModeratorThe Purple Haze cover is great. Have you heard this cover of Voodoo Child?

Reg the Fronkey FarmerModeratorIf you don’t know Joanna Connor then check out this cover of a Muddy Waters track.

Reg the Fronkey FarmerModeratorAnd…finally….one I think will remind you of another band that should try to cover it 🙂

I’m stumped. What third band are you talking about?
