UnseenParticipantYes, he IS serious according to Justin Trudeau.
Which is just further evidence of his mental decline. Here’s why:
Frankly, at some point, Republicans will ask Trump “Have you thought about which party Canadians would tend to embrace and whether the GOP would ever win another presidential or congressional election?
At that point, taking Canada another way will be the discussion in The White House. Possibly Puerto Rico-izing the country. Residents of Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories do not have voting representation in the United States Congress, and are not entitled to electoral votes for president.
I think this is far more likely, though I hope that the thought of America possibly getting into a shooting war with our friendly northern neighbor will leave a bad taste in the average American’s mouth such that Trump would have to give up the plan.
Of course, now that he’s in power, he has little reason to care what the public thinks.

ParticipantDon’t laugh this off.
To Canadians this is a REAL THREAT. And not the first time.
The war of 1812 is taught in Canadian schools as an attempted invasion of Canada. We in the US are only taught of the British invasion of Washington. But many of the battles took place around the Great Lakes we share with Canada. Including on Canadian soil. Against Canadian troops. And talk in Washington, at the time, was about securing our north coast from a British colony (Meaning Canada. Maybe we should separate it from England).
Rump is risking more than a trade war.

Belle RoseParticipantThis is truly terrifying. Trump wants to control all of the Americas from top to bottom. And more…..he thinks he’s going to rule the world. This country is dumber than a rock for electing him. I seriously saw it coming a gazillion miles away and have feared this moment for years. My nightmares came true. I wish I had been wrong. 😢

ParticipantI think most of us on AZ saw it coming too.

UnseenParticipantTrump is right in that Canada has a strategically important northern coastline which if we controlled it would add to our national security. He’s nuts, however, if he thinks turning Canada into a state would be a political advantage to him or the GOP. Which party would Canadians then tend to vote for? I think you know the answer to that and their electoral votes would seal the deal for the Dems for generations to come.
No. He’d have to treat Canada as something akin to a territory, governing themselves but being nonparticipants in national elections.
While I believe he, in his mind, is serious, I doubt he can pull it off, especially if it means anything like sending in troops to take over the country. I do think the average American’s sense of fairness and their attitude toward Canadians as good neighbors would force him to give up on the idea. I think GOP congressmen would take him aside and tell him it’d be political suicide.
On the other hand, he is showing dictatorial tendencies, so maybe someone needs to take him aside to tell him how dictators often end up (Mussolini, Ceaușescu, Gaddafi all met ends that were not pretty). The fates of kings and emperors have often been little better.

UnseenParticipantIf Canada became a state, it would dominate the United States. According to that crazy radical left-winger Steve Forbes:

TheEncogitationerParticipantUnseen,
I’ve never been a fan of Trump’s version of Manifest Destiny. The U.S. would have to take on all the expenses of Canada’s Welfare State and National Health Care on top on the U.S.’s own bad enough Welfare State and Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.
This song would quickly become popular:
MST3K–The Canada Song
The dig against the band Rush wasn’t called for, but it would be hard to not sing along after a while.

TheEncogitationerParticipantFellow Unbelievers,
Shortages of Doctors would also get bundled together. Here’s something I just learned today about our own heth care system:
How Congress Created the Doctor Shortage
The Feds require residencies for doctors, then have a legal monopoly on the funding for residencies and medical schools providing residencies, and then starting in the 1990s limited the number of residencies. Just like Mother England.

Reg the Fronkey FarmerModeratorIf California followed up on Canada’s offer to join them, then “Califada’ would become the 3rd largest economy in the world, just behind the U.S. and China. The combined GDP of Canada + California ≈ $6.5 trillion USD. California 66% of the combined total.

Actually, you could throw in Oregon and Washington and maybe New York State as well. I wonder if that would make Canada the largest economy. The red states are subsidized by the blue states as it is despite the fact that to hear the right wing, you’d think it’s the blue states that are the parasites.
If all of the blue states joined Canada, that would create the #1 world economy.
Most people seem to be unaware of the fact that Canada actually has a bigger economy than Russia as it is right now.

Reg the Fronkey FarmerModeratorCanada + California + Oregon + Washington + New York would form the 3rd largest economy in the world, behind China and the rest of the U.S. (excluding those five regions). Figures taken from OECD 2023 records
The rankings would look like this:
United States (full): $27.5T
China: $17.7T
Rest of USA (47 states): $20.0T
Canada + CA + OR + WA + NY: $9.7T
Japan: $4.2T
Germany: $4.5T
India: $3.7T

_Robert_ParticipantCountries with the most doctors per 10K are not exactly light on government oversight, Canada is an exception in that regard. With the US, it depends where you live because as is usual with most things much of the rural South is doctor challenged.
Cuba 94.3
Monaco 88.9
Sweden 71.5
Belgium 63.9
Greece 63.7March 23, 2025 at 3:38 am #56786
