December 8, 2025 at 9:50 pm #59363AI is destroying learning at university.
I’m not sure it is that simple. In the UK, the universities are having trouble funding themselves, and it sounds similar in the US. I don’t know all the reasons for that, and the two may have the same causes. So, they want to save money, so they cut courses and “optimise” based on what will make money for students and university.
So, they’re investing in AI at the same time as cutting courses. Is any conscientious student stupid enough to outsource their learning to AI? Maybe it’s the less conscientious ones we need to worry about.
December 8, 2025 at 11:05 pm #59364Reg,
Those 10k steps a day are on display. An annuity in perspicuity borne of an elasticity in perspicacity.
Does anyone doubt that AI in near future will replace humans in many fields? I can envision a patient who bemoans the singular access to a human physician while the higher echelons are treated by AI physicians. AI will ultimately be the acronym for actual intelligence perhaps. Scientists will endure longer than most or perhaps all other professionals. Inevitably though (assuming AI is ascendant) science will progress sans scientists since scientists can be venal and biased and unscientific and incapable of the cognition that AI will attain. Where that leaves civilization is the sci fi that is waiting. To what extent if any cyborgs play a role in our future? Whether we continue to continue is also at issue.
Why aren’t we recognizing how easily humans are manipulated, acted on, influenced and indoctrinated? For those who have thought about atheism & theism the argument is familiar regarding born in India you’ll likely be a Hindu. Born in Saudi you’ll likely be a Muslim. It is equally applicable to mind viruses. Whatever the contemporary bullshit may be. Qutar pays 6 plus billion to American universities so they apparently understand it implicitly and it is mind blowingly effective. Free Palestine bitches. Tell a lie often enough is Goebbels know how. The algorithms are expediting the numbers of believers with religious zeal in their beliefs. Those beliefs may create norms that are antithetical to all that we hold dear.
If some discipline or movement addressed human nature, indoctrination of beliefs and norms it might be the fillip to alter our trajectory. Handled scientifically it would be near impossible to refute. And if it penetrated the zeitgeist then no more White colonizer bad guys and indigenous good people. We would see Muslims as victims just like we see cultists in discrete cults as victims. We could promulgate influences that are aligned with human flourishing. Aah good luck with that.
December 9, 2025 at 1:50 am #59366The Nobel is about the invention, not the person. Shockley won his Nobel Prize for his role in the invention of the transistor. Late in life he spiralled into racist pseudoscience, eugenics, and intellectual self-destruction.
Pauling won his first on chemical bonding which was foundational. His work underpins everything from protein structure to materials science. Later in life he went down a rabbit hole on a “vitamin megadose” crusade which was utter woo, but it has no bearing on the extraordinary intellectual payload he delivered to chemistry. He fully deserved the Nobel.
But they give awards for discoveries, not ethics.
I think Crick most certainly deserved his for uncovering the structure of DNA. Pauling had tried to solve DNA and got it wrong. Crick saw immediately why: the geometry and chemistry didn’t work. He eventually cracked the logic of our genetic code and should have go another Nobel for that!
I think you mean James Watson? He helped reveal the structure of DNA and then misunderstood what DNA implies about human variation, i.e., that “race” is a social shorthand, not a biological category. He was a classic example of ultracrepidarianism and should have stayed in his lane. (I once sat behind him in a lecture hall….when he was 90!!)
Arafat had not demonstrated a peaceful track record and the Nobel Committee must have been trying to reward the idea of peace, not the reality of it, in the hope of peace actually “breaking out”. The Oslo Accord ultimately failed. It was not deserved.
Obama’s felt even less deserved to me. Again, it was awarding hope instead of achievement. It was during his first year in office and there was no landmark treaty, no conflict was resolved and no major diplomatic achievements happened. Just rhetoric on nuclear disarmament. What would Henry Kissinger think about that? Or FIFA?

You’re right, it was James Watson I was thinking of who was ultra-de-crepit with “race” pseudoscience. And Linus Pauling’s specific recommended vitamin megadose was Vitamin C, a Woo treatment which ironically provided much added patient clientele to non-Woo Dentists.
Of course, the ones who never got a fair share of the deserved credit for the discovery of the DNA double helix were Rosalind Franklin and her student Raymond Gosling, whose X-Ray Crystallography provided the first actual images of the DNA double helix.
The phenomena of Nobel Prize Winners getting out of their league and going bonkers is not confined to Shockley, Watson, and Pauling and is common enough to even have it’s own name:
Nobel Disease–Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobel_diseaseWow, the carriers of Nobel Disease go beyond mere rabbit holes into Hollow Earth territory digging on through to China! 😱
Fortunately, Nobel Prize-winning Free-Market Economist Milton Friedman did not take the bait others fell for and even proposed competition in rewards as a possible solution. A Capital(ist) idea!
Until that takes off, the Nobel Prize is as much cautionary tale as it is accolades to achievement.
December 9, 2025 at 12:45 pm #59370I was just talking about Rosalind Franklin yesterday to someone! Her data was shared with Watson and Crick without her consent, via Wilkins and indirectly through Max Perutz. Her intellectual contribution was not recognized in 1953 the way it should have been, so by 1962 the Nobel committee did not see her as a third discoverer. Crick later said that Franklin deserved far more recognition and that the way her data reached them was “regrettable.”

December 11, 2025 at 3:30 pm #59378Patience for patients is outstanding with you two.
Older i get more apparent it is that something is definitely wrong. Has evolution created a scenario where only a few among us can think their way out of a paper bag?
Anyone who is religious and has been exposed or given opps to learn and dig out of ignorance is….
Even without religion which after all is about promises to keep and miles before the long sleep it involves the unknown. And sure all indications suggest it is make-believe. Yet our purview is limited and universe is mother-big. So even if you hit her with the heaviest rock to falsify the attributes it is still beyond our scope. How about the mythologies/ideologies we can examine?
Germans are supermen and innately superior to other groups especially Jews. Ok but during WW1 there were more decorated German Jews per capita with iron crosses and distinguished service than other Germans. And this in spite of antisemitism. And in German society Jews rose to the top outperforming other Germans. So how are you Germans going along with what is patently false? Untermensch bitch! Don’t fucking confuse me with facts. Liquidate that element because it is poisoning good pure German nation.
Trump is the one uniquely qualified and capable so that his being president having committed crimes and repeatedly exhibiting narcissism & low character and usurping powers and jeopardizing USA democracy is not only justified but celebrated. Ok but have you listened to this guy? Really listened? Have you considered his policies? And yet you still feel it in every once of your being that man is my hero! OK.
I don’t hate Jews. I am a champion of human rights! I hate Israel because it is genocidal, apartheid settler colonial state. I hate zionists! Oh but the middle east is a cesspool of human rights violations. Actual genocide, actual apartheid and even the people you are uniquely and solely bleeding dodger blue for are mistreated in other middle eastern nations. The people you champion have themselves been colonized but not by Jews. Every other government in middle east is inferior to Israel’s based on western values. Are you sure you just can’t stand that Israeli government? No other motivation, ha? You can’t stand Jews having their own country after they have been persecuted for centuries in both Christian and Muslim world? And there is no parallel concept for zionism. But it is zionism? It is not fishy that the stereotyping and Jew hatred is ongoing having only shape shifted a bit and fueled by Nazi, Christian, Muslim and soviet propaganda? Ok you got it. Free mother fucking Palestine! Globalize the intifada! Make that bitch judenrein so that Palestine is free and with self governance there will be LGBT dancing naked in the streets!
Something is a bit off i should think…
December 12, 2025 at 10:33 pm #59379UN is the body that oversees human rights and preserves the need for human rights oversights.
If it were not so human and mindlessly driven by racist ideology i would call it a shameful body and just one more pathetic play.
UNWRA gonna run with ya and produce more terrorists. Very important that the resistance is not met with resistance. She was asking for it mentality is alive and well. Aint that swell?
