I remember after the Tiananmen Square massacre (1989) I blurted out that I would boycott Chinese goods as a protest. I immediately corrected myself for being stupid as this would only harm individuals and not the Communist Party. I will still travel to the US for Thanksgiving this year. I will spend time in both Georgia and Florida which seem to…[Read more]

Reg the Fronkey Farmer replied to the topic #MeToo Must Start Making Distinctions in the forum Small Talk 6 years, 3 months ago
I was recently asked over lunch at work, by a male, in the company of 2 other men and 4 women as to what behavioural changes I might consider making towards women in light of the #MeToo movement. I replied with an emphatic “None”. This was met with blank stares by the women and some “tut tutting” by him and nods of disapproval by the men.

It’s funny, in the West over the years, we see Muslims as more violent, and Hindus as more peaceful, but this is a fallacy. I spent some time in Fiji, for example, where the Hindus are aggressive and the Muslims gentle. I had always thought that Buddhists were extremely peaceful, and then I learned of the Buddhist aggression in Myanmar. It seem…[Read more]

Don’t look at Mueller, look over here!! Over 400,000 Syrians have been killed over the last 7 years. Over 5 million have fled the country and over 6 million are internally displaced. Over 1000 killed and about 5000 injured in Eastern Ghouta by the Syrian government in the last 6 weeks. Nothing done. Now about 50 are killed by gas and the world i…[Read more]

@davis and more specifically masochistic – the practice of self flagellation.
Indeed. And then of course…the most horrid masochistic move that some people under certain circumstances make: marrying someone you don’t like and having cold pleasureless duty bound sex…all very agonising and yet enjoyable…because God and Jesus and stuff.

@ Daniel W.
Very well put!
I retire in two and half years and every day I roll into work I tell someone, anyone, how grateful I am that “I still have this gig”. I have ton’s of gratitude today. I hold no grudges against anyone because I learned to forgive and have asked for it too. I’m never happier as when I can be of use to someone. Especially…[Read more]

Update. So, @danielw I’ve downloaded Headspace and done Day 1 of the session. I didn’t know it was going to be an English accented voice directing me – living here in the states, I miss English accents and it made it so much easier for me to want to listen. And I actually achieved following the directions and messing with my concentration – much…[Read more]

@davis, nicely thought out and composed response. Im very liberal, I think, and fearful about the current US and world political paradigm shifts. But I cant handle the politically correct and academic left in the US. I don’t know where that leaves me.
I call that being liberal but not to the point of stupidity.

Woody Allen and Roman Polanski are on my mind lately. Oh, and add William Friedkin to that list. Their movies (Alice, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Rosemary’s Baby, Macbeth, The Exorcist and Cruising all come to mind. Immersion in these movies gives me goosebumps. I have actually corresponded with Mr. Allen and found him to be a most gracious and (in…[Read more]

@ Robert – true, she does push a lot of woo. As a friend suggested, Dr. Oz for Surgeon General, anyone? I doubt they’ll be using the smooching Harvey pic on any campaign lit.

@Reg – your lawyer joke reminds me of another. The difference between a New Yorker and an Angeleno is when a New Yorker says Fuck you he really means good morning. When an Angeleno says Good morning he really means fuck you.
