Science — the kind that requires evidence and reason. 8 years, 10 months ago Eric Temple Bell’s four-volume set, “Mathematics: Queen and Servant of Science” impressed me greatly when I read it about sixty years ago while I was earning a degree in mathematics.
However, the queen has lost her throne. She no longer rules mathematics; she serves it. Despite mathematicians’ visions of elegance in their productions, the universe obeys no one’s mathematics.
It is a beautifully written math book. I view math as a language that helps us to understand and communicate about the universe, but yeah…an incorrect assertion about the universe can be wrong, even if all the math is correct.
