Simon PayntonParticipant@davis – how do you politely tell someone they’re arrogant?

ParticipantHow do you politely tell someone to shut up? Lol jk
Sorry…I just couldn’t pass that one up

ParticipantSo how do you politely tell someone their world view is a delusion?
Why is it even your place to try to “tell” someone anything especially since you don’t know anymore than they do? Dennett says himself we may never know the origins of the universe.

Reg the Fronkey FarmerModeratorHow is suggesting we may never know the entire origins of the Universe arrogant? It implies we may not be able to ever know which has a ring of humility to it. It is the Christians who are happy to tell me they know their god created the Universe that sounds arrogant to me. They even tell me that I lack humility because I do not believe what they believe and yet offer no evidence to support such an extraordinary claim. To suggest it is not an extraordinary claim also smacks of arrogance. Christians will knock on my front door and tell me this and then give me a piss poor magazine to explain it all. All happy smiley from being high on their delusion.

Reg the Fronkey FarmerModeratorI have no problem telling people they are suffering from a delusion if they insist on telling me they are immortals who are in constant communication with the supernatural Creator of the Universe 🙂

jakelafortParticipantYes, theists commit a COSMIC ARROGANCE in pretending to have a clue and still greater when telling people how to live.
When a writer challenges theistic world views it is either going to be an explicit or implicit rejection of an entire way of life. It can be shattering to a theist to be told their lives and the universe are not at all as they had imagined.
Is it a responsibility of the writer to do it in euphemism or gently? Is there any pulling punches when a theist is proselytizing?
Contrast that with a peripatetic atheist knocking on doors? It kind of sounds absurd.
Contemplate also the atheist who is accosted by a theist.

To get the full context of what I was saying you’ll need to read a few lines back. That is not what I said.

It is the atheists who are happy to tell me they know there is no god.
What is really the difference?
September 26, 2017 at 5:28 pm #5555
StregaModeratorThe difference is that atheists don’t go a door knocking with their message, don’t take pleasure in announcing threats of hell, and so on. An atheist doesn’t believe there’s a god. Not many atheists are 100% certain, partly likely because of the absence of a common definition of Godhood.

Reg the Fronkey FarmerModeratorYou mean this one?? Arrogance. Total arrogance. Especially considering he simultaneously says we will probably never know the origins of the universe….

Reg the Fronkey FarmerModeratorThat “stupid shit” is a response to the blatant disregard that Christians in government have in violating the American Constitution that they have sworn to uphold. That is, they swear on their Bibles to uphold it and then promptly break their oath. It is an attempt to highlight the hypocrisy of Christians and to stop discrimination against atheists and people of other faiths. Religious freedom also means freedom from religion in public places. Members of the Satanic Temple believe in the existence of the same God you profess to believe in. If this is what it takes to break the religious privilege that Christians exert in government and at local level then All Hail Satan!

Reg the Fronkey FarmerModeratorMy point is that if it is hard wired into our brains there is a reason for that. Logic would follow that God does in fact exist….
How is that logical? God exists only in your head.

Reg the Fronkey FarmerModeratorChristians claim to know how the Universe was created. Atheists don’t. We are not telling you that there is no god. Don’t pretend you do not know what atheism is. We do not believe in the god you profess to belief in. You seem to have your own new version of Christianity, one you say is not religious and in which you have a personal relationship with a god you claim cannot be defined. We also don’t believe in hundreds of other gods including ones you don’t believe in. We do not claim to have knowledge that your god does not in fact exist. We just have no reason to believe it. The total lack of evidence – that which exists outside of your head – is why we consider it so implausible that we dismiss such an extraordinary claim. We simply find it unbelievable.
