I used to watch CNN every morning, but no more. I now browse a variety of news sources from RT and Al Jazeera to CNN and MSNBC and Fox.

To be clear, I don’t trust Fox, in general, more than I trust CNN. Both are corrupt, but as in the famous broken clock saying (“Even a broken clock gives the correct time twice a day”) they are right now and then.

No longer can one sit back with just one trusted source and expect to get a grip on world politics. One has to watch a number of them and then ask oneself What are their motives? What makes sense of what’s going on? Who benefits from their reporting and opinions?

Usually I go through multiple sources and then try to find a direct source if possible. For instance, if a story states “New study indicates eating potatoes may kill you” I see if I can find either the actual study, or at least statements from the researchers.

I don’t go to editorials for information. Sites like Vice are for entertainment. In some cases I just accept there are some types of information news outlets do better with than others. For instance, if there is a mass shooting, most sources will probably report the number of fatalities and injured fairly accurately. Names will be released when available. Details like what weapon(s) were used will be reported with varying accuracy. But much of the reporting will be peppered with ‘some say…’ type information and speculation that I don’t have much use for.

I apply heavier scrutiny to certain topics than others. When outlets report on affairs surrounding Indigenous Peoples, I’ve found inaccuracy is the norm. It’s not that I believe every outlet has an agenda here. I think in many cases they’re ill-informed and ill-equipped to report. Cultural bias and ignorance can lead to misleading information being reported.

There are some news sources I generally exclude for various reasons. It depends on what the story is. On my phone I don’t block news outlets from showing up in my search feed, but on my laptop I do. Which one I use to search for a story depends on my mood.

I get my news from the “My Pillow Guy”. I find sometimes he pads the truth, maybe to cushion the blow so we can sleep on it. If he says the election was stolen and vaccines are bad; rest assured, that’s not just “pillow talk”.

I have been noticing that the mainstream sources seem to be cheerleading war. After all, the war against Hassam Hussein put CNN on the map because they were the only network on the scene with several reporters in rotation from the hotel balcony of the room they shared. War is viewership for CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, and even PBS.

I do have one morning show I trust to either cut through the bull***t or reveal their biases. The hosts are a couple, both ex-newsreporters, presenters, or hosts (their careers span multiple news jobs). This does not mean I accept their reporting as gospel. Not at all. But I do find them to be a good springboard.

Their shows generally start with some chitchat giving their subscribers time to log in. In this video, I recommend jumping in at 2:25 to get an idea of how they approach the news.

    Fellow Unbelievers,

I’ve heard there are even better apps for news, but for now and here lately, SmartNews is what I use to get news and analysis from many sources.

SmartNews: Where drunk, angry, FOXNews-watching Uncle and vaping, dumb TikTok-meme-ing Kid can meet and join hands in Bubble-Land down the Memory Hole!:

It does have neat and thoughtful content, though it can equally cement one’s viewpoint as well as challenge it, all depending on how you use it.

I listen to NPR for most of my news. I have begun to watch Al Jazeera and BBC. Althlough none of these are unbiased. I will contend that there is not, and cannot b,e any source of information that isn’t biased. Because of that I also try to watch news from sources that I vehemently disagree with. Hopefully it helps me understand the morons…opps…I mean christian conservatives I have to work with every day.

Virtually all local news outlets belong to or subscribe to one of the major networks. Anything they report on world events came to them via Fox, ABC, NBC, CNN, et al. KUFO does not have boots on the ground in the Ukraine.
