Same here, google’s pissed me off by ignoring my specific search terms even when they’re in quotes, with a plus sign, and they keep giving me the “did you mean… blah blah” results that steer me away from what I want.
Like Strega says, it’s obviously a profit-motive thing; common practice. The only ways I can think of to work around capitalism’s flaws are 1) educate the masses to be both informed and skeptical; 2) somehow monetarily reward the people and institutions who know how to responsibly curate and link to vetted data, information, research, and more.
It’s a tough problem. There are some good guys out there in .edu, public radio and tv, journalism (yeah again for WaPo and NYT), but the real-world hurdles: They need money to survive, and they need a savvy audience who can pay and cheer for them.

Do the masses wish to remain willfully ignorant?

Well yeah, there’s an evolved, built-in, natural spectrum of sheepism in all of us, because bands and tribes thrived best with a spectrum of leader-types vs follower-types. It was still more functionally egalitarian back then, everyone being in a life-long, mutually respectful, face-to-face environment of survivalism.
I think I often sound obscure, so I’ll reword. What I’m saying is that some of our human, ingrained sheepism (which once led to actually getting things done) is now exaggerated to pathological apathy with many people holding no hope of adding direction to the group, vs those on the other end of the spectrum who pathologically lead, pander to, and take advantage of the sheep. Our world grows more complex and impersonal by the day in spite of having all the creature comforts we could ask for, and the sociopaths discover a continually enlarging frontier of opportunities to profit from the increasing mobs of directionless sheeple.
[Jeez, I won’t know how much sense I’m making until I read it again in a few days.]

February 9, 2018 at 2:49 pm #7848About that Ireland connection; didn’t Apple get their asses handed to them by the EU for not paying taxes on their company sites in Ireland? The EU, which Ireland is a part of, wanted their cut even if Ireland had some private deal with Apple. Apple recently started doling out the Billions.
February 10, 2018 at 3:11 am #7850More google censorship: recently google removed gay dating apps in indonesia – apparently at the behest of the government.
February 11, 2018 at 2:42 am #7856@davidboots, I’m not sure that’s a bad thing. Indonesia has been rounding up and arresting gay men. Those apps increase their risks. Same in Egypt. I was buying some coffee this week, thought, I haven’t bought a Sumatra for a while. Then I thought, Indonesia is hell for gay people, and bought some Columbian instead.
