@jakelafort – I agree with the sentiment, but I am more optimistic (or naïve!) about the future. The pace of scientific and technological progress has far outstripped the average person’s ability or willingness to keep up intellectually with these advances. It is not so much that there is a growth in ignorance and stupidity but rather that it now has a greater visibility.
I put the blame on Social Media. Entirely. It amplifies the voices of the uninformed, the conspiratorial and the chronically angry. They can now all unite and howl at the moon together with no shame or embarrassment. I would suggest that the percentage of people who reject reason or evidence hasn’t changed that much. It is just that every village idiot now has access to a global microphone via social media and they are unable to see that they are infected by its algorithms. They think they are consuming information, but the algorithm is consuming them. It is feeding them back versions of their own outrage until it becomes self-sustaining like a snake consuming its own tail.
They are just sheep who think they are wolves. Trump has that point well figured out. I even think that is how he got “Christians” to follow him. He understood that if they have already fallen for the “big lie” of religion, that en masse, they will follow anything as they cannot think freely.
Social Media is just an echo chamber of bias confirmation. It is a digital Ouroboros, endlessly devouring its own misinformation while believing it’s sustaining itself with knowledge.
