Hey, I have a question for the group – are there any arguments against equal rights and respect for gay people that aren’t religious? (IMHO saying it’s “unnatural” doesn’t count, because if it were actually unnatural there wouldn’t be any of us right here smack in the middle of nature.)

OK, two questions – why aren’t fundamentalist religionists trying to destroy the lives of people who eat shrimp-wrapped bacon just as fervently as they promote misery for queers? That sounds a bit flip, but it’s a serious question.

    • There are no rational arguments of course but humans are not generally rational. Gays are different than the majority and minority groups have always been oppressed. Religion came along and simply provides the pseudo rationality to justify the oppression.

      • You’re right, rationality isn’t very relevant to people for whom the only part of an argument that matters is the conclusion they want. I love Stephen Fry’s comment:
“It’s the strangest thing about this church – it is obsessed with sex, absolutely obsessed. Now, they will say we, with our permissive society and rude jokes, are obsessed. No. We have a healthy attitude. We like it, it’s fun, it’s jolly; because it’s a primary impulse it can be dangerous and dark and difficult.
It’s a bit like food in that respect, only even more exciting. The only people who are obsessed with food are anorexics and the morbidly obese, and that in erotic terms is the Catholic Church in a nutshell.”

    • There is the (pretty weak, imo) argument that anal sex has a higher risk of spreading disease.

There’s also the argument that if gay men are repressed, they are more likely to have children and pass on their (higher average intelligence) genes.

All in all, pretty weak arguments when put against equal/human rights.
