Is The U.S. On The Way To Becoming A Fascist Dictatorship?

As Donald Trump rampaged through the Republican primaries last March, I argued here and on the New York National Public Radio station’s Brian Lehrer Show that neoliberal Democrats as well as free-marketeering Republicans were leaving it to Trump to do what his Inaugural Address has left him no choice but to do: to become the dictator of the nationalist, plutocratic regime that he is installing under the banner of what he called “a historic movement the likes of which the world has never seen before.”
He has vowed to vindicate forgotten Americans and, through them, American greatness: “January 20th 2017, will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again. The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer…. I will never, ever let you down. America will start winning again, winning like never before.”
Never? Ever? Like never before? As Trump puts his forgotten Americans to work while rolling back overtime pay, benefits, and union-organizing rights, and while protecting those who have already enriched themselves, and channels resentment against only certain neoliberal elites who were complicit in the theft, the word “dictator” will be no euphemism. Let me explain why, in the days ahead, we’ll be left breathless by swift, forceful moves (or lurches) toward an authoritarian, Constitution-warping presidentialism.
Trump’s Inaugural denunciations of “politicians who prospered as jobs left and factories closed” – coupled with his vow that “the American carnage” caused by the hiring and buying of non-American people and products and deepened by crime, gangs, and drugs, “stops right here, stops right now” – leave him no choice but to humble or destroy all those “politicians” who resist him.
It won’t matter whether they’re principled conservatives defending the Constitution itself or neoliberal Democrats who long ago betrayed the New Deal by draping a thin raiment of “diversity” over an increasingly self-serving and, yes, sometimes smug, elitism.May 31, 2018 at 4:22 am #9433May 31, 2018 at 4:51 am #9434
Bill Maher thinks so. The Real Time host began listing the items that have been “checked off.” They include
“you’re a narcissist and you like your name or face on buildings,”
“appoint family members to positions of power,”
“rallies,” [Who has rallies after the election is over? He feels blue because some was mean to him on TV — I need 9000 drooling idiots, in an airplane hanger in Tuscaloosa — Stat! ]
“you hate the press and use your own propaganda outlet” (which he singled out Fox News as “State TV”),
“you use your office for you own personal financial gain,”
“align with other dictators,” [and strongmen,]
“claim minorities are the cause of problems in this country,” and
“you lie so freely that people don’t know what the truth is anymore.”
And the last one, the one he hasn’t done is:
“military costume.”May 31, 2018 at 8:00 am #9435

Trump’s “taste” in home decor more or less aligns with casino decor. The decor a gambling “whale” would expect to find in his comped hotel suite.
But what can you expect from a guy who orders a Porterhouse steak cooked well done, then smothers it in ketchup?May 31, 2018 at 6:02 pm #9437
“align with other dictators,” [and strongmen,]
Watch him speaking. When he’s speaking to one of his mobs, his style almost seems borrowed whole cloth from Il Duce.May 31, 2018 at 6:03 pm #9438May 31, 2018 at 6:04 pm #9439
Imagine an apocalypse: the most economically powerful and militarily capable nation firmly in the grip of a narcissistic and power-hungry fascist dictator.May 31, 2018 at 10:04 pm #9444
Here is article I just stumbled upon (from NBC) while looking for something else. It covers quite a lot with the many interesting links embedded within it. Do you think America has enough legal safeguards built in to prevent the possibility of it ever happening?June 1, 2018 at 4:14 am #9448
Trump is being celebrated in Israel as King Cyrus or Artaxerxes though he may be more synonymous with King Herod under the Roman Empire, the Empire that the Third Reich is modeled under. The foreboding implication does not get lost on eschatologist .June 1, 2018 at 9:59 am #9453
You say: The foreboding implication does not get lost on eschatologist.
I hear: The conspiracy theorists will be in a frenzy with this fresh shot of confirmation bias.June 1, 2018 at 1:26 pm #9454
That’s a great write-up, @unseen. It’s exhausting just trying to keep up with the daily insanity. It feels like America has come to a fork in the road and that it will be decided this year. If trump is making a total power grab, he will likely need to do that before the November mid-terms, when the likelihood is that democrats will take the House and possibly also the Senate.June 1, 2018 at 4:55 pm #9455

Well I bet they trembled in their seats when Hitler came to power. But the scary part is that it can happen again.

The US is running down the road to fascism. It strikes me that the USA has always had a predisposition towards authoritarianism, racism and religeous bat-crappery but now it all seems to be in over drive. Trump has enabled all the pettiness and hatred that lurks under the surface. It seems to help that so many there seem to be, well ………………. just plain stupid (sorry).
on the plus side Trumps wrecking of US soft power seems to waking Europe up to other interesting possibilities of a world sans US influence. The GOPs williness to embrace Russia is rather baffling though !
