    Unseen,

So you’re saying the entire history of abuse of Executive Power is chopped liver compared to what you are saying may transpire? I gotta say that’s hard to believe.

Well, again, it isn’t just Republicans. Get a load of this bright boy who thinks we live in Sparta and that the President can run civilian life like the Military:

Mr. President: America Needs A “Stand Down” Order by John J. Grossenbacher
    https://thehill.com/opinion/national-security/585038-mr-president-america-needs-a-stand-down-order

I salute all who served in the U.S. Armed Forces, but in our Constitutional Republic (not a “Democracy” by the way,) the Military is a servant to protect us from foreign invaders, not a master.

Under the Posse Commitatus Act, regular Military cannot be used to enforce domestic law in peacetime and the President,as Commander-In-Chief cannot issue such a nonsense “Stand Down” order.

Mayors can send out police, Governors can send in National Guard or State Militia in cases of riot or disorder (and should have during the past two years of Antifa/BLM/Black Panthers/Proud Boys/Alt-Right craziness,) but Presidents cannot just give Military-style orders to civilians. This former Admiral Grossenbacher should stick to his Mahjong and Bacce Ball and shut the Hell up!

    Fellow Unbelievers,

Another thing: Atheists should not be too keen on “Democracy.” Whether done directly by Citizens or indirectly by representatives, literally translated, it means unlimited majority rule, even against Individual Rights. Historically, it was what did Socrates in when a majority in Athens found him guilty of “corrupting the youth” into questioning the city authorities and their gods.

I wouldn’t trust a majority of any Americans, Left or Right, with my Individual Rights, especially freedom of thought and expression. I am just glad The Bill of Rights and the Reconstruction Amendments are not the subject of a vote because they would not survive in these times.

    @Enco…

Get your blinders off. Never before have we had a party working on setting a free election aside and having certain key states they control send in their hand-picked electors to vote in the Electoral College.

You wrote: ‘I salute all who served in the U.S. Armed Forces, but in our Constitutional Republic (not a “Democracy” by the way,) the Military is a servant to protect us from foreign invaders, not a master.’

Au contraire: Their oath is to protect us from “enemies both foreign and domestic.”

You seem to trust absolutely that the military will stay within the guard rails, but if Gen. Flynn is any indication, there are some at or near the top willing to countenance a coup to return the country to their vision of America, even if it isn’t shared by the majority of Americans.

    Unseen,

I don’t see where you think I trust the military to “stay within guard rails.” I just linked to an article where Former Vice Admiral Grossenbarger is clearly advocating going outside the guard rails. Vice Admiral.
Grossenbarger and Geenral Flynn may want to wrestle over which Unconstitutional powers they wish for the military to have, but they both want the military to go beyond from desiring to doing. This has never ended well, throughout history.

    Jake,

Have you gone full “special”?’ You’re never supposed to go full “special”!

And given the nature of “Euphemism drift,” I’d say that my way is probably the kindest way to describe infirm mental states.

You failed to comment on “Get your blinders off. It’s a slow-motion coup.

    Unseen,

First off, both the Democratic and Republican Parties for decades have been in cahoots to keep third parties off the ballot via ballot access laws and campaign financing laws.

Also, both Democratic and Republican Party members in Congress have farmed out their Constitutional power to declare war and regulate interstate commerce to the Executive branch in the form of the President in the case of war and administrative “alphabet soup” agencies in the case of economics.

If elections are unfair and Presidents are too powerful, both Parties are to blame.

    Unseen,

Another thing: A Coup d’Etat, properly understood, is when the military uses illegal and usually violent means to depose and take over civilian authority.

Whatever one may call that dogpile fracas on January 6th, or whatever the Republicans are doing now, if military isn’t involved in the takeover, it is not a Coup d’Etat,

Describe these “cahoots.” Where were the secret meetings held. Who attended them.

Besides, I’d rather have two parties instead of, effectively, just one, wouldn’t you?

Finally, there are good reasons not to have additional parties with enough of a following to result in deal-making. The GOP or Dems might have to accede to the demands of a cockamamie extremist party in order to get into power, making the tiny minority party actually more powerful in some respects than the major parties. Kind of like the way if the Dems want to get anything done, it will have to be with the approval of President Manchin, who represents either his tiny little state or himself. Often, it seems more like the latter than the former.

And let’s not even get into Sen Sinema. WTF is going on with her nobody knows.

    “Properly understood”? Who decides that?

Granted, most coups are prosecuted by the military, but coups can be civilian as well:

“A coup d’état, usually shortened to coup, is a seizure and removal of a government and its powers. Typically, it is an illegal, unconstitutional seizure of power by a political faction, military, or a dictator. Many scholars consider a coup successful when the usurpers seize and hold power for at least seven days.” (source)

    Unseen,

I suppose a Coup D’Etat could be civilian, but typically when I’ve read the term, it was always associated with a military force taking over a civilian power. I notice reading further the factors that lead to coups are usually military-related.

Well, even by the arbitrary standard of holding power for 7 days, January 6th was not a coup and since the rioters were not armed, there’s no way they could have hoped to hold the Capitol Building for 7 days.

And what wouod they live off in that time? Did the QAnon Shaman bring buffalo jerky dried after he made his fur coat? Would they raid Nancy Lugosi’s fridge for Klondike Bars? 😁

You’re being intentionally or unintenetionally obtuse.

It seems like you WANT to be intellectually imprisoned by “what usually happens.” The attempted coup was this one: Vice President Pence would reject the election results of the key states with GOP state legislatures where Trump’s reelection failed by slim margins. This would allow the legislatures in those states to appoint Trump-friendly electors whose new votes would upend the popular vote.

THAT was the attempted coup. The purpose of the attack by Trump’s mob on Congress was to get Pence, who had decided he lacked the authority to do anything other than rubber stamp the election result, to relent.

Trump and the GOP are diligently working on changing laws on the state level to give the state legislatures in those key GOP-dominated states, the ability to set aside election results by declaring them invalid due to fraud, and simply appoint electors to the Electoral College.

An article with much more detail.

I’m surprised that you’re so ignorant and uneducated on this.

and since the rioters were not armed, there’s no way they could have hoped to hold the Capitol Building for 7 days…

Several of the rioters were armed. The Flynn brothers are a disgrace while some other rioters were military (or ex-military) personnel.

Many of the rioters were QAnon supporters and MAGA morons with persecuted Christian complexes who thought they were being patriotic but they were herded and indoctrinated into taking their actions by more nefarious actors.  They are domestic terrorists and should be treated as such. The Republican party who now support, either tacitly or openly, those who pulled the strings is pathetic.  And they are using all means at their disposal to take over next time. If it walks like a coup and talks like a coup……
