The article mentions Roe v Wade being overturned, and that may be an exacerbating factor, but this sort of sexism has to my knowledge been pretty common for a long time in practical medicine.

Women and pain management is a huge issue in terms of women not being believed when they say they are in extreme pain. Women and reproductive health (long before this year) has been an issue, for instance, the reluctance for doctors to perform tubal ligation, or the hysteria over young trans men being ‘sterilized’. While doctors are not necessarily possessed of some moralistic imperative that all women must reproduce, there does seem to be this tendency to undercut women’s ability to know themselves (though to be fair, this is not an issue uniquely experienced on the basis of sex).

I just wanted to hedge in case one of the three doctors in the US who felt differently happened to be lurking. You never know.

That said, these problems are pretty common in Canadian medicine as well. I suspect the list of regions where it’s an issue is far longer than the list of regions where it is not.

I wonder if the pain management policies for women would have different outcomes if the M.D. was female? It is likely that pain is perceived differently by women so they might be more willing to prescribe medication. I guess not being religious might help too?

I wouldn’t be surprised if not. I think a lot of professional biases might have convoluted psychology, but that’s just armchair philosophy. I don’t have that much basis for the suspicion.
