My aunt Shirley is a space buff. She wanted to show a friend a picture she’d downloaded from the internet. But the woman turned away and said “I don’t want to see that. The bible says the sun revolves around the Earth. I don’t want to see pictures of the Earth revolving around the sun.”
She was wrong, of course. The biblical writers evinced n…[Read more]

“I’m not perfect, just forgiven.”That must have made you want to throw up.
It made me seriously question the mental state of people who say we need religion to give us an objective moral standard.

But if I love a person, I want them to be happy even if I’m not the one who is making them happy. That sounds like a good definition.
Here’s how I put it: True love (which one gets only from parents or true friends) is “wanting what’s best for the other person even if it’s not what you would wan…

Not only is the Universe expanding but the rate of expansion is accelerating. All objects that have mass (mass not weight) will exert a “pull” on each other when close enough to each other. I really Think we shouldn’t be so harsh in our interpretation of the Old Testament. Couldn’t the commandment for people to be stoned actually be a biblical endorsement for pot legalization?

According to NASA, Andromeda will collide with our galaxy in 4.5 billion years, and in 10 billion years, these two spiral galaxies will form an elliptic galaxy with their respective black holes becoming binary black holes orbiting one another.
I am fascinated, yet puzzled, by the idea that the Milky Way is on a
collision course with…[Read more]

This reminds me of when I was a kid my father (a mental health counselor) would give me an abstract word (patriotism, love, humor) to define. Then he would pretend he’d just arrived from another planet and had no references with which to understand my definitions “Well, humor is when something is funny.” “Funny? What is that?”

Self-loathing is an integral part of Christianity. To even become a Christian, you must accept that you are a sinner in need of salvation.
I don’t think that a gay man who has a strong sense of himself without a strong religious background would want to be a Christian. He’d have to change his world-view from “I am gay. Accept me.” To “I am g…[Read more]

Letting go of the coffee table and taking out first step. Once we cross the river Stix in another existence the most we’ll have is the same choice between unfalsifiable spiritual hopes and cold reason.

Individuals often leave Christian fundamentalism once they realize the keyword is mental. But your use of the word “rabid” is on the mark.as Douglas Adams said, their grasp on reality is like trying to grasp a bar of soap in the shower.

I believe this disorder will slowly fall out of favor in the Christian community. The same bible that condemns homosexuality also forbids women speaking in church. Just as the church found a way to get around this when sexism became “socially obsolete,” as gay people gain more acceptance in the larger society, the church will find a way to ign…[Read more]
