UnseenParticipantDon’t kid yourself, America, you’re immersed in the leadup to it. If their attempts to fix the 2022 and 2024 elections fail, they are ready to simply toss democracy out the window and take what they want by force.
The goal: A return to the last time conservatives and reactionaries felt comfortable: the 1950’s.Nonwhites need not apply.

trexdgrParticipantMatt Gaetz and Steve Bannon said an ‘army of patriots’ and ‘shock troops’ should take over the government if Trump runs and wins in 2024 (yahoo.com)
This may be one of the most alarming articles I’ve read lately. And what the article doesn’t mention, what are their plans if Trump loses? may be more frightening.

UnseenParticipantAmerican democracy is tottering. It’s not clear Americans care.
Indeed, it took six days for anyone to think this topic was worthy of discussion.
From the linked article:
There is no doubt that democracy in the United States is at serious risk. The year began with an attack on the Capitol designed to thwart the transition of power; instead of repudiating this violence, Republicans doubled down on the lie that Trump won the election and are working, right now, to rig the system in their favor. Neither Democrats nor the general public are doing much of anything to stop them.
Several pieces of legislation on voting rights have been stopped cold by the filibuster, as neither Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) nor Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) seems willing to make an exception to the archaic Senate rule in order to protect democracy. Meanwhile, the voters who care are mostly Republican partisans, believers in Trump’s lies about 2020. An October poll found that 71 percent of Republicans believe democracy is facing a “major threat,” as compared to just 35 percent of Democrats.
Experts on democracy warn that America is sleepwalking toward a disaster, a situation where the electoral playing field is so tilted in the GOP’s favor that America’s people no longer have a meaningful voice in who rules them. “We’ll wake up one day, and it’ll become clear that Democrats can’t win,” says Tom Pepinsky, a political scientist at Cornell University.

UnseenParticipantBased on what I see as I look around my country, America will be a dictatorship starting in 2025 when Trump returns to the presidency. Republican legislators are working hard to guarantee that future elections will be for show only, with no Democrat or any non-Republican ever winning again.
There is little chance of a rebellion. The people who welcome this change are the ones with the guns.
Trump has wanted the ability to put down any criticism from the press by, at first, getting legislation making suing the press for defamation much easier, which means that even if there’s no basis for the defamation, the free press can be harassed into silence or forced out of business or put into prison.

UnseenParticipantTHE GOP IS BUSY SETTING UP AN IMPERIAL PRESIDENCY
For the better part of four years we saw Donald Trump and Friends do their best to diminish the power of Congress and to a lesser extent the courts.
Our tricameral system functions properly when the three branches respect each other and cede to the other branches the powers the Founders wanted invested in them.
However, Trump defamed and defied Congress at almost every turn and criticized the Federal courts whenever rulings (as they often did) didn’t go his way. He even went so far as to criticize a judge based on essentially his race. Remember his “I’m building a wall” comment when a case was pending in front of a judge with a Hispanic last name from a family with a Mexican heritage?
He very nearly pulled off a coup on January 6. Just imagine where we’d be today had Mike Pence not certified Biden’s election. We now know that there was a step-by-step playbook that would have been followed to wrest the election out of the hands of the electorate and use highly-politicized state legislatures to offer up “alternative” Electoral College electors who had not been elected by the public.
Now, I think it would have ended up in the Supreme Court and that it’s quite likely that even a conservative Supreme Court would have wanted to put the kabosh on such a tactic.
HOWEVER, just ask yourself this: Would a Trump who showed so little regard for the powers of Congress have bowed to the power of the Court?
BEAR IN MIND that under our Constitution, ALL enforcement power, effectively, is in the executive branch which controls not just the FBI and the intelligence services but the military as well, so a President who places little value on what the other branches do or think, could simply ignore the Court.
The Founders expected the branches to defer to each other and respect certain boundaries. But do you have any doubt whatsoever that President Trump would have let the Supreme Court stand in his way?
Trump and his friends took note of what didn’t work for them last time, of who was uncooperative, and of what obstacles thwarted their coup.
Next time, they will be better prepared.
And mark my words: There WILL be a next time.

TheEncogitationerParticipantUnseen,
The United States has been going on the path of dictatorship by a thousand cuts on and off ever since we began. Washington violently put down the Whiskey Rebellion over excise taxes on liquor.
Andrew Jackson expelled the Cherokee from their lands by Executive Order and told the Supremes who ruled against him to come and enforce their ruling.
While the one good thing from the Civil War was that the slaves were freed, Lincoln also used conscripted forced labor to fight the War and suspended habeas corpus and freedom of the press for his opponents.
Woodrow Wilson sicced The American Protective Associaton a.k.a. Junior G-Men on a whole slew of people suspected of holding dissenting opinions and controversial unconventional ways, started hysteria against loyal German-American, and nationalized entire industires to fight “The War to Make the World Safe for Democracy” after he got into office on the slogan “He Kept Us Out of War.”
Hebert Hoover, despite his unearned reputation as a Capitalist, exercised dictatorial powers under Wilson’s War Industries Board and helped prop up the Soviet Union’s Communist tyranny from collapse with foreign aid to Lenin’s New Economic Plan. And of course, he continued Prohibition and the Volstead Act, which haunts us to this day with crazy-quilt alcohol laws and “The War On Drugs” and now 5 generations of kids who think it’s hip and chic and sexy to be Goddamn gangsters.
Franklin D. Roosevelt assumed all kinds of dictatorial Executive Powers, setting up all kinds of “Alphabet Soup” regulatory agencies with powers not granted by Congress to hamstring both business and labor. Him and Mussolini had a mutual admiration thing going prior to World War II and FDR even called heads of his agencies “Dictators.” Then he tried packing the Courts with crony Justices who would rule the way he wanted. Then, during World War II, he detained in camps over 140,000 Japanese-Americans, as well as Chinese and Koreans who got swept up for the ride ’cause they’re all alik, doncha know?
Richard M. Nixon’s Watergate was only his most conspicuous Uthoritarian moves. Like Johnson and other Presidents before him, Nixon used the FBI, The Justice Department, the CIA, and the IRS to harrass dissenters. He also brought us the Environmental Protection Agency that harasses construction if human habitation if it might harm the habitat of a snail darter or a spotted owl. And of course, Nixon open relations with the Buthers of Beijing, who slaughtered millions in The Grat Leap Forward, The Cultural Revolution, the massacre of students at Tiananmen Square, and now the murder of millions worldwide today with their cover-up of the release of COVID-19.
I, of course, didn’t cover everything, and there is much more with every President, but you get the picture. None of this is really news. Just more reason for “Eternal Vigilance.”

jakelafortParticipantLets see.
Give a person too much power expect abuse of power.
But give a company too much power and free markets spread wealth, prosperity and equality.
Seems reasonable if you are not inclined to challenge your ideology.

That was an interesting litany, but none of them rise to the level of what the GOP is doing, namely a literal complete takeover of the Federal government including invalidating all future elections and putting a de facto if not de jure end to our multiple-party government.

_Robert_ParticipantIt is probably a death throes reaction of white christians becoming the minority. The young are becoming more left leaning, secular and less white every year. They wanna look forward, to fix the climate and the rigged financial systems. tRumpists can feel it in their bones. It’s “do-or-die” for them and if they miscalculate, they will regret causing an anti-fascist “wake up call” like never seen before in the US.
These idiots are doing a pretty good job of killing themselves off right now.

I don’t know if you missed my point or what. They are setting up a system where the disgruntledness and disgust of the majority won’t matter and will be manageable, because the minority will be in control of the military and the media and the elections.
This system works: see China and to a lesser extent Russia, both regimes Trump admires. And if the government makes the masses generally happy and complacent, as in China, it may be able to hang on as long as China, and I’m not seeing China failing anytime soon, are you?

Belle RoseParticipantI remember feeling when Trump won the nomination that I REALLY wanted to get out of the US. Even more than I already did. And now that desire continues. I am actively planning to become an expat. I have no interest at all in sticking around. The US is a ticking time bomb.

It feels that way to me. I will be surprised if we return to status quo.

_Robert_ParticipantOK, so you are throw-in-the-towel, wimp-ass Democrats, LOL. What else is new. That’s why we lose. China, Russia? Give me a break. They have never known democracy.
