In response to the subsequent posts, I must say the polemic between those who champion free speech and those who take offense at pejorative language goes on.           A few decades ago, certain Indian tribes took offense at football team names—the Atlanta Braves and the Washington Red Skins. Yet, the movie White Men Can’t Jump would never have been produced if white producer hadn’t green lighted it. It’s like the comedian Paul Mooney said “White men don’t have to jump. They own the team. But when you don’t own anything—when you have no power—I guess the best you can do is worry about what people call you.

 

As for me, you know the saying, it’s not what you call me, but what I answer to.

At the heart of my contributions are these questions: Can’t one use “unwoke” terminology without actually being racist? If I say, for example, that Biden sold liberals down the tiver with his environmental policies, is that OK or not?

Does one have to stop (or should one stop) using expressions that once upon a time had a racist connotation even though that connotation no longer exists? Words and phrases like peanut gallery, mumbo jumbo, off the reservation, master this or that or (in computing) master/slave, blacklist, sold down the river, etc.

Biden is approving the Alaska oil drilling project and so yeah, you could say he sold liberals down the river with his recent environmental policy and that phrasing is probably appropriate in my opinion. I don’t want to forget where we have been, and I think it is a good exercise to remind people how these phrases came about and yet I was a little hesitant using the words “master/slave” during engineering discussions. I didn’t think to ask what the black engineers on my team thought about that. Many whites have also been enslaved throughout history, however most of that cruelty has long-ago faded beyond our social memory.

The question is whether they should be verboten or avoided, not whether they are to be verboten or avoided.

There are concerns way more nefarious than words that have a racist-related past used without malice, often thoughtlessly.

In terms of terms…avoid utilizing in public historically offensive and invidious descriptors. (In private if friends/family kibbitz and use racial slurs without malice provided kids in earshot understand then it is fine) As to new takes on offensive it is less important but if you can avoid it in public then avoid it.

As far as being woke and all the implications ya really need to be specific. Don’t lump it all in to a i can’t stand wokeness, i hate it all. There is definitely a good aspect of wanting to address issues involving various forms of hatred. From what i gather the movement has gone too far at times like revolutionaries always seem to do but some of their stuff makes sense and causes awareness where the majority were ignorant.

When it comes to KKK, Nazis or any of the other fucking pieces of vile humanity expressing themselves publicly i say fuck that. Fuck their first amendment because the old bullshit rationale ought to be jettisoned. A simple balancing of interests which is what constitutional law does suggests that fuck them! Oh good heavens…what if other racist mfers are dissuaded or unable to express their views? That is a shame. And when USA is in such a precarious political state having the right to go after dangerous elements is extra important.

I’d like to think most people lack wicked intentions. Micromanagement of others’ speech or actions is resented and is why wokeness is controversial and, sadly, it’s what the woke don’t get or don’t care about.
