    Jake,

Amenable, possibly. But not inevitably so.

    Enco,

To clarify i am not saying every single human being. I don’t think for instance AI could write a program to influence us to believe in God.

But under the right circumstances and calculated environment civilization could be moved to believe that their forbears were troglodytes in the way they fought incessantly and cared so little for each other-that their us and them of nationality, religion and political ideology was terribly destructive.. etc

And in place of the now beliefs decent beliefs and ideas could be implemented…or even worse…

Does anyone doubt that mankind is amenable to PROGRAMMING? The maketplace of ideas can be manipulated to bring about intended beliefs. I am convinced.

No doubt about it; but some way more than others. We survived until now by acting in concert. A naked human wandering the woods or plains alone is dead meat. We all join tribes one way or another and follow the trend; each to varying degrees.

    No argument.

    Fellow Unbelievers,

I enjoy this Forum thoroughly and love participating, but I have several problems at once now that require laser focus to handle. I’ll try to be back here as soon as I can. Take care and keep on thinking!

It would make the cable companies and trans-oceanic cables obsolete

    Aren’t trans-oceanic cables already obsolete?

There is a satellite farm just 5 miles from me that downloads ALL the Europe-to-US phone traffic. And most internet traffic. And there is one just like it on the west coast that downloads from Asia. (See WIRED mag March 2012)

    Unapologetic,

I asked that same question when when Edward Snowden was in the news and, much to my surprise, the overwhelming bulk of data was still sent by cable and still is to this day, though this is changing.

The Battle for Bandwidth: Submarine Cable and Broadband Satellite Data

My thought was that perhaps Musk and others as wealthy as him could change this by making satellites more ubiquitous, durable, and powerful, and networks more resilient. If Musk and others could succeed at this, Internet commerce and culture could reach even more people on Earth and this could mean more innovation and prosperity on Earth that could be invested towards exploration and settlement in space later.
