I like his analogy of junk information to junk food; how they’re addictive and unhealthy. (I don’t remember his exact words, but that’s what I took away.) Taking this further, the agents are fast food sellers getting your lunch money, analogous to social network AI algorithms getting your clicks. People are attracted to fast food flavors/additives, and social episodes of anger, arguments, vilification, us vs them narratives and other clickbait.
I’ve felt that “bad humans” who own or control AI could be the biggest threat by using and programming AI to do bad things and/or intentionally program AI to behave in unpredictable ways. Some of that is already happening with profitable social network algorithms, getting those clicks and hours of attention. What Yuval Noah Harari says is that those companies “in control” of AI should be held responsible for any harmful effects of their algorithms, aka AI.
Then there’s other “bad actors” who would empower AI, e.g. autocratic governments to control their people. Giving AI that kind of control might be the biggest threat if/when programming it to control their population gets unpredictable and out of everyone’s control.
I hate youtube’s algorithm, and I’ve been blocking youtube channels like crazy, after first taking the time to watch and verify when a channel really sucks. (You can do this via the three dot menu next to the video’s thumbnail, but you can do this only in the list on the right, of videos they offer you to watch. It doesn’t work on other pages, or for videos listed as search results.)
Jeebus, there are SO MANY lousy/clickbait channels. So to block a channel, right after watching the video, click on the back arrow to see the three dot menu for the channel listed on the previous page. After some months of blocking channels, it looks like the list of choices that youtube suggests to me is finally improving.

I like the distinction he makes about humans v AI with the former having free speech and the latter not. If i understand algorithms to date they are essentially businesses influencing consumers of information to be in Plato’s cave and see those shadows. And i suppose there are nefarious actors attempting to influence elections by spewing misinformation into those caves.
Once the manipulation is more intentional it is scenario after scenario for dystopian sci fi.
It is so obvious to me that humans are like dogs who can be trained. There is literally nobody home with 98 percent of people. Higher education only gives the veneer of intelligence. Just can’t think outside of their imposed ideologies. I imagine as fungible and trainable as we are that we could be made into better humans. Humans who would be aghast at the notion that a few MOFOs in power decide to send its citizens to war, who would be aghast at identity politics and instead see all humans as essentially part of one big tribe, who would be aghast at companies who sacrificed the interests of society for their profits.
Stumbled on this and it did not really surprise me. Look at how American Jewish kids view the morality play of Israel in terms of genocide in Gaza and sympathy for Hamas. It is just pathetic. AI will control us by 2034? That is absurd. Humans are discerning, have free will and make decisions for themselves!
There is no free will. Just like billiard balls, their actions (and thoughts) emerge inevitably from the antecedent conditions going on in their nervous system and mind, many of these antecedents beyond their conscious apprehension or understanding.

I agree. What would it matter the identity of the Palestinians in Gaza living in a degenerate culture? If it were a fetus from Athen’s of antiquity, if it were a fetus from a prominent Jewish Israeli family, if it were a fetus from ANY mother, any time or place? There are so few in a contemporary Gazan environment who could escape it without the imprint of that culture, without Islamic beliefs, without being sexist, without extreme hatred of Jews and a Jonesing to end state of Israel.
And as long as Islam is powerful and UNWRA or its equivalent is programming a new generation of Palestinian victims it is gonna be a continuing shit show. So all the left and the Islamists accomplish is a continuing meat grinder for those people and a horrible environment that precludes most from flourishing. There was a time i have heard and read when there was some level of decency between Jews and Arabs in that region. That won’t return until the lies of the far left and the Islamists pipe down.
