I once spent about 20 minutes explaining that Intelligent Design was not a valid ‘science’ to a Muslim apologist who was arguing the opposite. Someone asked me if he could expound upon the points I had made and I was happy to allow him to take over.

I have never tried to teach a theist any science since then and I insist on only debating or discussing the nature of their beliefs instead. All apologists will try to avoid explaining what they mean by ‘god’ and try to get a debate on Evolution going instead, which never leads anywhere.

Reg it looks like Dawkins developed that annoying little eye twitch. I had that when i was practicing law. Luckily Allah removed the eye twitch when i quit. Come to think of it that is what made Chief Inspector Clouseau’s boss in Pink Panther so entertaining.

@jakelafort – absquatulate, a great word to have in the vocab.

In future, in a debate with a theist, should I fail to expostulate, I will just absquatulate rather than remonstrate and I won’t care who’s looking, especially when the theist is more intransitive than the verb 🙂

The thinking these days is that the earliest Israelites were just another group of Canaanites and worshiped the same pantheon. The 2nd level Canaanite storm/war deity called YWEH was under the boss god “El” as in ISRA-EL”. The two gods became conflated over time and YWHE’s former competitor BA’AL eventually became the demon Beelzebub, AKA Satan. These polytheist tales are the oldest parts of the Bible; written in an archaic Hebrew that would have been much like Old English is to us. Of course, it was later mistranslated at every opportunity by Jews and Christians to make it seem like El and YWEH were always one and the same.
