Sunday School 9 months, 1 week agoThe UN stated out with noble ideals but it has lost a lot of respect. It was never a moral body, just a diplomatic one that existed to keep states talking to each other. We will never get moral clarity out of a system where Saudi Arabia, Iran, China, Russia, and liberal democracies all get equal seats at the table. At best we get a consensus of…[Read more]

I am not “me”, an unchanging physical entity. I am a sequence of highly similar spacetime regions whose internal structure overlaps. I once described myself as a “constantly merging shadow copy”. That is I am the person I was yesterday plus some incremental changes. Keep that idea going and each day (or minute, hour) I am a different person.…[Read more]

Question for block universe supporters. That is definitely me 🙂
We don’t experience “motion through time.” We accumulate records and memories and have stable correlations between them. My brain at one spacetime location contains records of other locations. (The “block” is the four-dimensional spacetime structure). Nothing in block univers…[Read more]

Sunday School 9 months, 1 week agoPanpsychism is an attempt to avoid “consciousness from nothing” by baking mind-like properties into the foundations of physics. That is almost like an argument for Creationism. For me, consciousness is an emergent property, not a fundamental physical property. It is not present in parts that can be assembled. In the same way that water mole…[Read more]

It only took one monkey to create the entire works of Shakespeare. His first name was William. (rtff)

I have so much more to write on this. I will try over the weekend. Just finalizing a project for work tomorrow, so maybe Sunday.

Some more thoughts……The human concept of Time is difficult to shake off. It feels intuitive but this is only because we feel an innate sense of Time because we have evolved a hard-wired temporal sensitivity. Marking the seasons and changes in the weather helped us survive. We even have a circadian rhythm to a natural light-dark cycle (as do all…[Read more]

Almost. In the block universe, things absolutely do happen. Stars explode or conversations happen. But these only happen locally (within regions of spacetime). What does not happen is a global update of reality. Another way of putting it (I am also explaining it to myself as I write this) is that nothing happens to the Universe as a whole but…[Read more]

Time “marches on,” “flies,” “waits for no one” are not ontology. They are just descriptors of how humans feel but not how the Universe works.
Here are my thoughts on “Time and Momentum”. It is not Time…but Momentum that counts. Without the latter, i.e. relational events, the former is not required. Time would not have been conceived of w…[Read more]

“Now” is already gone the moment you say it. The instant you think now, neural processing time in your brain has already elapsed so the concept of “now” is reconstructed after the fact. “Now” immediately becomes a memory, not an event. The Andromeda Paradox destroys the idea of a universal cosmic present. Even two people standing a meter apart do…[Read more]

Sunday School 9 months, 2 weeks agoTime…..
Tree.
Two hundred years of standing.Three-year-old
staring up,
motionless for a minute.Neither knows
how long that minute is.Only I do —
because I remember
when minutes mattered differently. And yet that moment belongs
only to me. -

I agree almost entirely with this idea. I am a big fan of Carlo Rovelli and “Relational States”. There is no “Now”. All events exist “tenselessly”, i.e. without the concept of past, present or future. “Earlier than” and “later than” are structural facts, not things waiting to happen. We don’t experience the “whole loaf”. We are just a local pr…[Read more]

Sunday School 9 months, 3 weeks agoSimon…about the reply from the evangelical street hawker – He was confused as to why I treated what he said as a subjective claim rather than an objective truth. These people are very well versed in controlling the conversation. They can dodge the question or reply with a question and most people don’t realize this.
EG, if I say I don’t b…[Read more]

Sunday School 9 months, 3 weeks ago“Most of my friends are so well educated they can scarcely believe God exists.”
Theologian Lelio Sozzini in a letter to John Calvin on 14 May 1549 from Switzerland, commenting on the unusually high level of skepticism about God’s existence among educated men in Italy. It was an early encounter with what later historians see as the rise of s…[Read more]
