@DrBob – I do not know what it is about my previous post that you do not get. I thought that I had explained that I am unable to understand how Catholics, like your good self, do not see the paradox or contradiction in believing that they can be vegetarians even when they “Eat of my flesh and drink of my blood”. I began my post by asking you to …[Read more]

@DrBob. “We theists”? I don’t think you speak for the majority of theists. I certainly wouldn’t attempt to write, “we atheists” followed by anything except the dictionary definition of atheists.
I wish in some ways that you did speak for more than the slender channel of Christians with similar mindsets to you, but truthfully, that’s just not…[Read more]

@Drbob the moderators are me, Reg and Pope. You were welcome at TA and also welcome here. I expect we will get around to updating the rules at some stage. The most basic rule is , “don’t be a dick”. The one you might bump into occasionally is , “don’t preach your gospel here”. Guided by those, you should be ok!

@bellerose hey! We don’t all use you! Well, we use your posts to cheer ourselves up because they’re great :). Let it go, honey.
@DrBob. So long and thanks for all the fish, a great quote from a bloody marvelous atheist, Douglas Adams – now that IS someone I miss.

I will be sad to see @drbob go. It may be there are plenty of shitty sites with shitty apologists but Dr Bob is not one of them. He is an apologist of a rarer type with more quality.
As such I got a lot from the debates I had with him. I obviously don’t know everything that happened but I’d appreciate if someone in the know could fill us in. I…[Read more]

@DrBob, @Unseen, @Davis, @Simon—Thank you, I’m genuinely grateful for your thoughtful words. It’s a never-ending journey for me, with quite a few arrogant and not-quite-informed claims (some really ill-informed ones, sadly, too) over the years. Your responses give me hope and encourage to tweak and verify my views. My use of words and the edito…[Read more]

@DrBob – I think it has something to do with the misconception that atheists are amoral or “just want to sin.” After all, I work in a helping profession that is often compared to “angels of mercy” and so forth. But, I don’t think I would be fired for those reasons, at least not ostensibly. I should hope they are conscious enough of the EEOC to…[Read more]

On the very first day of catechism, the nun teaching our class told us that snakes used to have legs, walked upright, and talked.
*FACEPALM*
Sheesh.
And yet, @DrBob, albeit in fear of sounding like a broken record, apparently when someone informs us that Jesus died and then came back to life three days later it is not a case…[Read more]

Simon Mathews replied to the topic Might the predictions of climate change be wrong? Or do you believe on faith! in the forum Science 9 years, 6 months ago
I agree with @DrBob that climate shouldn’t be considered the same as weather in the sense that general trends over time are easier to model as statistical noise is lessened. So whilst we cannot say whether it will rain next Tuesday we can say with some confidence that polar ice caps will continue to melt (for example).
In terms of solutions, I’m…[Read more]

LOL. Well, that’s true. And as I have said in this thread and on multiple occasions on the old TA site, I am completely understanding of folks who just want or need to vent. If I lived in the Bible Belt of the…[Read more]

There is a great deal to criticize about religion or the religious, but it should be done fairly and rationally.

@DrBob: maybe I knee-jerked, here. With respect, you’re doing what a lot of apologists do: playing with words. What do you mean “my faith decides how it chooses chooses to…” And “my faith is the group that compiled the thing…” And “that’s what my faith teaches.”
It sounds like you’re casting this “Faith” as an entity. Yet, you use “faith” as…[Read more]

The premise of the Bible – despite protestations otherwise – is faith* in magic and mysticism. There simply is no other way to avoid this elephant in the room. Consider: talking snakes, asses, & bushes and a virgin-born water-walking resurrected flying zombie whose bloody death supposedly substitutionally “atones” for mankind’s nature. To rele…[Read more]

@DrBob, if the bible is just one book out of thousands why not take the good bits of out it, put them in a new book and ditch the wretched thing. You’d think Christians would want to do this to stop silly atheists like us quoting all the nasty bits. And yet the bible is retained as some kind of special tome. You can’t argue surely that most…[Read more]

@DrBob takes want he wants from the Christian canon and leaves out what he wants. He is a cafeteria Christian. Thanks goodness for that because fundamentalists are scary. There’s no point in trying to use bible quotes to catch Bob out. He doesn’t think the Bible was written by God, only inspired by God. He says it was written by man. Therefore we…[Read more]

@SteveInCO You know kelvins have the same scale as celcius, right? Like the difference between any two degrees is the same for both kelvins and celcius. 0K = -273C and equivalently 273K = 0C.

@DrBob,
Darwin’s book does not endorse racism and I believe the morality of human eugenics is not exactly clear yet. We sure use selective breeding for crops and livestock. The Bible directly endorses slavery. Ironically, anybody who connects the theory of evolution with racism is probably biblically driven. -

@DrBob, Hi – you’ve decided (for now) to come with us. Excellent. At the moment there is no threading here. Threading has advantages and disadvantages – can’t decide yet whether I prefer it or not. @DrBob,
Agreed, and we should also stop saluting that book called The Bible as well, since it was used as providence to set the positive morality of slavery for generations.
