Would you say that there’s something in atheism that makes people want to kill themselves? I don’t think there is, and I’ve never heard of that before. Atheism makes people want to celebrate life and make the most of it. Maybe suicidal people gravitate towards it as a nihilistic position.“If there is no God, everything is pe…[Read more]

I agree with Sartre that suicide is the ultimate expression of one’s freedom. I live in Oregon, a state with legal assisted suicide. Which is kind of silly, in a way, since most of us have a way of doing it if we were to so choose. As a diabetic, I always have vials of insulin on hand. I passed out recently in a hypoglycemic crisis. Luckily, I…[Read more]

There will be no note in a bottle telling whatever (if anything) comes after what our universe was like. That we beheld beauty.

How to deal with it indeed.I think the only thing to do is to live a good life: authentic and compassionate. Then, at least it’s not wasted. There is no cosmic significance of anything. The point is, what’s it like for you?

It’s been a sad day for me. It started with watching Paulina of The Warning singing the song Breathe, which she has sung in public only once and probably will never do again. Obviously, it expresses a deep hurt we may never understand unless she someday feels at peace with it enough to talk about it.
Then, I started reflecting on a ride I was on…[Read more]

@ Simon
By “dying,” I mean not getting the attention they deserve, not passing totally out of existence.

Sunday School 1 year, 7 months ago“Nothing” doesn’t exist. Instead, there is “quantum foam”.
Possibly irrelevant comment: the philosopher Willard V.O. Quine held that everything exists once properly categorized. For example, faeries exist wheh you categorize them as mythological beings.

Case in point: Tam Lin by Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention
This is a song sung with inimitable flourish by the legendary Sandy Denny. It’s based on a Celtic folk tale about the romance between a fair maiden named Janet and a handsome but cursed elfin prince named Tam Lin. I’ve begged the major song reactors to do a reaction to this song with…[Read more]

A 10/9/24 concert in a small setting where, lacking the giant video screens they use in their major concerts, they just show up and play virtually nonstop, putting on exactly the same show they would for a crowd of 50,000, musically speaking. Sadly, my favorite Pau song, 23, seems to have been dropped from their recent playlists. And, much as I’d…[Read more]

It may be about attention span. I’ve been watching videos of reactions to the classic 1979 sci fi/horror classic Alien and the younger the viewer the more likely they are to complain that “nothing happens until a half hour into the movie.” Yeah, nothing but scene setting and character development. They want the horror scares to start right…[Read more]

Here’s another one exhibiting the hyper 3D effect that also goes flat when you pause it.

There are tons of trippy computer-generated “deep dives” into mind-bending fractal worlds. They use the rules of perspective to simulate depth in 2D but the example in the top post does something I can’t identify to go beyond those rules, understood and used by painters in the Renaissance until today, to depict objects in space accurately. I will…[Read more]
