PopeBeanie started the topic Fighting Trumpism and Single Party Takeovers in the forum
Politics 4 years ago(This topic can be made broader than what the title indicates, with Populism, Nationalism, Authoritarianism, and Oligarchs on the rise around the world. E.g. Macron’s re-election is a pleasant exception. Even if you’ve already seen these news pieces, I consider some of these “iconic” to the Trump Era.)

Unseen replied to the topic The Republican Party is succeeding because America is not a true Democracy. in the forum
Politics 4 years, 3 months agoI watch this show every morning I can. They promote themselves as an (if not “the”) alternative to the corporate media news sources on the one hand and the ultra-right/-left crazy sources on the other. He is if anything the more liberal member of the pair with a creative flair while she is more of a businessperson and ex-business/finance…[Read more]

Unfortunately, I am starting to think Unseen is right about a pending authoritarian takeover. I don’t have a fucking clue about what a solution would be. Politics 4 years, 3 months agoReg,
Several big problems with this man’s thesis: The U.S. elected 45 Presidents under our existing Constitutional framework without a January 6th occurring after each Election.
Also, even with The Supremes having a majority of “Conservative” Justices, they still didn’t want to hear any of Trump’s claims of voter fraud and didn’t want to…[Read more]

Politics 4 years, 9 months agoReg,
I shed no tears whatsoever for the decline of the Christian Right and only regret that it hasn’t happened faster in my own community. I can’t count the numbers of times people come into the store giving out bible tracts and wearing T-Shirts with thoughtless scriptures like: “Iron sharpens Iron” from Proverbs 27:17. (Uh, no. It’s ha…[Read more]

Politics 4 years, 9 months agoI am actually very afraid for this country. The few crazy assholes are ruining it for the rest of us with their conspiracy theories and lies. They may be smaller in numbers but as long as these fringe extremists types exist in the intensity and propensity to violence, our country isn’t safe. Remember…how many men did it take to ram a plane int…[Read more]

Politics 4 years, 10 months agoThe reality is not that the Evangelicals are being attacked but that they are imploding. Their ranks are not being repopulated by their children because the younger generation sees that conservative beliefs are either to some degree racist, homophobic or anti-LGBTQ. They are too educated and have a much less insular view of the world than their…[Read more]

Politics 4 years, 10 months agoThe following is an opinion piece from today’s New York Times by Michelle Goldberg.
The presidency of George W. Bush may have been the high point of the modern Christian right’s influence in America. White evangelicals were the largest religious faction in the country. “They had a president who claimed to be one of their own, he had a tes…[Read more]

PopeBeanie replied to the topic Who to watch in the next few years? in the forum
Politics 4 years, 11 months agoI’ll try not to settle too much on Tucker Carlson as a barometer of who to watch until the mid-term and 2023 elections, but hey, imo, he represents to a significant degree the most dangerous Americans. In this case, fallout and tribalism wrt humanity’s covid saga, including whacko conspiracism will last a long…[Read more]

Politics 5 years agoFrom The Atlantic, IDEAS: Tucker Carlson, Unmasked
Excerpt:
Although Carlson makes a lot of ridiculous claims in a short period in this clip, it is his comments about children that are most disturbing. After complaining that mask mandates imposed by the state are equivalent to living in North Korea, Carlson executes two athletic rhetorical…

Politics 5 years, 1 month agoAt the recent CPAC in Florida (Desantis territory) it was obvious that the GOP is still the party of Trump. I mean they rolled out a “golden calf” in his image for the event! Not sure what Cruz will make of that when he come back down from the mountain top. Maybe he will smash it and try to rebrand himself as the savior of Republicanism while…[Read more]
