    Have a great week everyone!

Next to the ridicule of denying an evident truth, is that of taking much pains to defend it; and no truth appears to me more evident, than that beasts are endowed with thought and reason as well as men.

Surely biological science supports the Sex Binary, but psychological and social sciences reject the Gender Binary.

Simon, did you actually read the article before you posted about it?

“ In fact, of the 140 million babies born last year, at least 280,000 did not fit into a clear penis versus labia model of sex determination. Genitals, hormone levels, and chromosomes are not reliable determinants of sex. There are, for example, people with XY chromosomes who have female characteristics, people with ambiguous genitalia, and women with testosterone levels outside the typical “female” range.”

Maybe you missed this paragraph in your enthusiasm to have an opinion 🙂

Wow…that is about 1 in 500. That is higher than I had though. Maybe I will actually “read the article”. 😉

I was going on Frans de Waal’s conclusion after writing “Different: what apes can teach us about gender”.  He says “sex is approximately binary”.

I read the article.  I found it a bit confused.

Maybe it’s me who’s confused.  I can’t tell the difference.  In any case, the biologist Frans de Waal would say they’re wrong to reject the sex binary.

RE: I never knew there was a law that allowed door to door proselytizing

I never liked the fact that anyone could walk up to my door and (try to) interrupt us. “Have you heard the good news?” That has been corrected when I bought our current 3-acre wooded property with a long drive and a gate. I saw the JW’s (I assume) in white shirts and ties on bikes invaded our road as I pulled out a few weeks ago. There is like one house without a gate and sure enough, in my mirror I saw them turn onto their driveway.

‘Binary’ with regard to sex is not significant as a biological term. The article does nothing to reject reproductive biology. It addresses the usefulness of the term ‘binary’ alone.

It’s as if two people looked at a car selling for $65,000. One says it is expensive and one says it is not. Neither are disputing the nature of the car nor the dollar amount of the cost. It’s a question of whether a particular adjective somewhat subjectively applied is useful, appropriate, or accurate.

Right now we’re at a strange state where the insistence that sex is binary has become politicized to the point that biology gets tossed out the window in the process. Is a particular biologist wrong for saying either sex is binary(ish) or not? No. Both cases can be defended. But in current times, is it useful or appropriate? Well, when that word is being used to paint a false narrative of actual reproductive biology, there are reasons one might write an article rejecting that adjective.

    Reg,

Great article on Ludwig Von Mises. He was not only a fantastic Economist, but had great philosphical insights of great use for arguing in defense of Atheism, Naturalism, and Secularism.

For instance, Von Mises pointed out that since the concept of “Purpose” is an end towards which an entity acts in the face of an alternative and with the possibility of not achieving it, it follows that “Purpose” cannot apply to a God.

Since a God is supposed to be Eternal andxImmortal, he would have no life towrds which to strive and no life-sustaining substance towards which to strive. Since a God is supposed to be Omniscient, he would have no knowledge for which to strive. And since a God is supposed to be Omnipotent, he would have no need of another outside substance with which to achieve a purpose. And since a God is supposed to be Omnibenevolent and supposedly incapable of evil, he would have no normative state of being towards which to strive and do better.

All of this of course logically gives rise to the questions: “If God has no Purpose, how, then, could he have created and imparted a Universecwith a Purpose?” And How could a God without a Purpose have created and imparted to humans a Purpose?”

Von Mises basically refuted Theistic Metaphysics and Theistic Morality all in one fell swoop!’ Sheer genius!

By the bye, anyone who’s read him and his life story could tell you the deep-thinking, erudite, cosmopolitan, man-about-town Ludwig Von Mises would want nothing to do with the Mises Caucus that took over both the New Hampshire then the National Libertarian Party. Nor would Ludwig Von Mises want anything to do with all the other Neo-Confederates, Paleo-Reactionaries, Neo-Reactionaries, Anarcho-Pinochet-ists, and Alt-Right Cringe-Meme Edge-Lords who use his name in vain.

Ludwig Von Mises and his Wife Margit barely escaped with their lives from the Nazis in Austria and had nothing but love for the remains of Freedom still left in the U.S.
