I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but I can’t seem to stop believing in God no matter how hard I try.

    This right here!

    You nailed it Reg!

Just got back from moving my kid into an apartment in Pittsburgh so she could attend graduate school at Carnegie Mellon University.

On the drive home, about six and a half hours, I got into a conversation with my wife, who was driving, about belief. My wife is Serbian and claims that she is Eastern Orthodox. Some how it became a lesson on Judeo Christianity. She had no idea that the god of Jews, Christians, and Muslim’s was a god that was invented by Jews. She had no idea about religion in general which I found odd when I asked her if she was perhaps Agnostic and she said, plain as day, “no I’m Eastern Orthodox. I just about flung myself out the window, and she was doing 60. Prime example of saying you believe in something without really understanding what it is that you believe in.

BTW, we never really talk about religion. I’ve always told her that I’m a stone cold atheist and she has always said that she believes something sparked this whole universe thing and she closed to call it god but it’s not like it’s cognizant.

LOL! I had a whole religious instruction work shop in a Jeep, crossing  Appalachia , with no cellular single; because T-Mobile don’t do mountains.

    Thanks for Sunday School Reg!

Hey Rose: Hope you’ve been well. Been a few weeks since last I peeked in.

Hear you’ve been going through some major decisions. One thing about this place is that everyone will try and answer your questions as factually and truthfully as they can. Hope you find your answers and in the end it all boils down to living this one as drama free and with as much happiness as we can try and fit in a 24 hour day.

    Here for you kiddo….

Thanks Noel. Driving your daughter to University must have been a proud occasion for both you and your wife. A six hour drive talking about religion might get some to asking “Are we there yet?” more than once. I would enjoy it though. Sometimes when the J.W. ‘s arrive at my front door, I can see the way they share a glance with each other over how “blessed” they are to get into discuss their faith with me – “that militant atheist”. Of course they have to follow my simple rules which they always agree to do.

You cannot use the Bible to prove the Bible and we are not discussing scientific theory or the irreducible complexity of the human eye. Explain your beliefs to me in simple terms and do not expect free science lessons.

About 2 or even 3 hours later they are making up excuses to leave, not knowing what just happened. The ones that leave the cult “were never true Christians in the first place” is what they tell me on their next assault, err, I mean visit. What!! Even John who was a Witness for twice as long as you are was never a true Christian?? Why do you think he really left? Think about it for longer please. I will make us all a nice pot of tea and we can discuss John and his reasons for leaving so the same thing does not happen to you. How does that sound? I don’t do sugar, hope that is ok?

Then there are the more common ones as mentioned here.

Do you think it would ever be possible to define what it like not to be able to stop believing in a god that you cannot define? Maybe it is possible to describe what it like to believe in a god you can only describe. Please try without using similes as you know what they are like.

Maybe God is Chinese because he makes everything? Sorry, I not perfect even if Jesus thinks I am to die for! Oh, I think we need a good apologist or even a theologian!!

Ok Reg what is the definition of Reg The Fronkey Farmer? You cannot describe even yourself in the way you expect someone to define God.

Again another non-answer in the traditional theist evasive manner. The Bible says “God is Spirit”. Is that not a definition? I won’t quote the verse as I am sure you know it.

“God is spirit” begs of the question of what is spirit…so no that’s not really a definition at least in my book, lol….I’m not evading the answer. I just pointed out that even the Bible doesn’t ever attempt to define God in the way that you are asking…

Some great comments on that Catholic one. 🙂

It is legitimate to argue that most persons are predisposed to theism because of their family circumstances and evidence shows that there geographical location is a fairly reliable determinant of which god they believe in.  Where does that leave those who are sincerely and charitably trying to convey God’s glaring absence to those who are so desperate to believe?  Perhaps it starts by recognizing that they are hurt, brainwashed and psychologically damaged and what we should do is act with compassion instead of trying to win a debate with them.  If you convince someone that it’s a fantasy to believe they will spend eternity with a Being they equate with their fathers, you have done them a favor.  But you may do well to first explain to them who their God really is, and that God’s love isn’t love in any meaningful way.  It’s quite the opposite.  Along with science; knowledge, logic, love and empathy are the essential qualities of an atheist.
