I don’t think the Mensa IQ test is culturally biased
I have taken a few IQ tests over the years. I was given one after getting an almost perfect SAT (standard test) score even though I only held a B average in school. I think IQ tests check a very narrow set of abilities. The ability to spot patterns or maintain several boring pieces of information in memory simultaneously or the ability to NOT make typical assumptions while reading the question. They also test quickness of thought as if it is more important than depth of thought, the kind that occurs over weeks or months. They have a certain “style” and once you crack that style you are off to the races. They may also test if you have bad hangover headache that day.
I tried this SAT to see how I would fare, having never done one before. I had no problem with the essays but not long into the Math I came to the conclusion that “Use it or lose it” is a truism. I think I might flunk it if I took it. Geez, I used to do all those questions in my head! Reminded me of this 🙂
I love algebra….it looks like the comprehension part would give me more trouble. I received a nice scholarship, however I burnt that money up being an ‘undecided’ major for too long, LOL.
I was just surprised at how much I had forgotten. I think if I spent a week “doing big boy sums” it would come back to me. I used to work for an economic forecasting “think tank” in a London University in my early twenties. I had the formulas for SD and regression analysis ready in my head. The Delphi Method?..long forgotten. Now there is an App for that 🙂
