After some debate with my editorial staff I decided to lead with this excellent story because religious freedom is not just for Christians 🙂
A study finds that religious beliefs have an enduring influence on how senators legislate. I hope they never use the Biblical definition of rape to define the law. Why do so many women still vote for the “power-drunk letch-fest” GOP? Do they still think that the terrible behavior of some men is just “boys being boys”?
This weeks’ report of large scale child sex abuse by Catholics comes from Germany. Sinead O’Connor will shed no tears for them.
After hearing Dr. Christine Blasey Ford voice cracking, the tears of more women have turned to anger at the world we have all inherited. Â So how did conservative followers of Jesus respond to the sexual assault of a fifteen year old girl?
This weeks’ Woo:  Esogetic Colorpuncture.
Climate Change: The world’s governments are nowhere close to the 1.5C target as science teachers call bullshit on the ignorant ideologies of deniers.
Atheist Ireland will today launch its campaign for a “Yes” vote in October’s referendum to remove the offense of blasphemy from the Irish constitution. Some goddamn blasphemies for you to enjoy on International Blasphemy Day.
Would the arguments of a clever apologetic help people to become atheists when we spot the flaws in their arguments?
A view of the delicate nature of human dignity.
What was it like when the first stars began to shine their light?
This article on gene-editing has a good explanation of how CRISPR works.
This week I am reading this book: Milkman.
We pause to remember: Luca Cavalli-Sforza.
Some photographs taken last week.
While you are waiting for the kettle to boil…..
Coffee Break Video: Irish Blasphemy Law. Dawn Smith – Why I left an evangelical cult. Did Brett Kavanaugh lose more than just his memory? Which house on the street do you live in?
September 30, 2018 at 12:28 pm #24222Have a great week everyone!!
You have rights, your beliefs do not.
Michael Nugent of Atheist Ireland.
September 30, 2018 at 1:25 pm #24224Thanks, Reg!
September 30, 2018 at 1:35 pm #24225Sinead O’Connor paid a real price when she pointed out how the Emperor had no clothes.
When I was 8 years old, some half-moron nun was wearing a habit costume and trying to teach me how to be a moron as well. We both knew that I was smarter than her and she really hated me for that.
September 30, 2018 at 1:53 pm #24226Thanks Reg,
Maybe there is a link between belief in God and denying responsibility for the environment?
If individuals only think about themselves, then we may end up with.
Tragedy of the Commons,
( which maybe why hunter gatherers lasted so long? they didn’t pillage then environment until nothing is left)
September 30, 2018 at 2:29 pm #24227Clearsky,
Maybe there is a link between belief in God and (a nearly infinite list of irrational behaviors)?
-the earth is 6000 yrs old, homosexuals are evil, the dead rise, there is a guy called the devil, people are born into sin, there is a heaven, there is a hell, prophets can ride to heaven on winged horses, you can’t eat this or that, you have to cut off parts of a baby’s genitals, cows are sacred, women are made of a man’s rib, women are unclean, you should abandon your family to follow christ, my god is the one true god and wants this or that, blah, blah, blah. So do we think there is a link between believing in god and denying responsibility for the environment?.well it’ s hard to say ,LOL
September 30, 2018 at 2:39 pm #24228In a few weeks time Bill Maher will have an episode to celebrate 10 years since his “Religulous” movie. In the meantime I agree with his “Religion does no harm” sketch.
I also like the Jon Stewart quote: “Religion gives hope to people in a world torn apart by religion”.
September 30, 2018 at 3:12 pm #24229“Gott ist tot”– God is Dead –Â Â Nietzsche.
The problem is the spell remains.  (pernicious spell of dogmatic religious belief).
September 30, 2018 at 7:51 pm #24230@clearsky – thanks for the example of “The Tragedy of the Commons”.
September 30, 2018 at 8:47 pm #24231Your welcome Reg,
I don’t know if your familiar with Jared Diamond’s work,
Anyway if your not there is a book called.
Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed.
Here is the Wikipedia link.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collapse:_How_Societies_Choose_to_Fail_or_Succeed
I remember there a part in the book where a society, collapsed just due to dogmatic/cultural/religious beliefs.

I would say that the relatively very short evolutionary experiment into self aware, highly cognitive lifeforms appears like it may fail along with the environment. If small numbers survive we will most likely rebound as a very different species.
September 30, 2018 at 9:37 pm #24233In Ireland and elsewhere, instead of goddamn blasphemies, let’s  have damngod blasphemies.
September 30, 2018 at 9:42 pm #24234John Stewart got it wrong; religion sells hope.
September 30, 2018 at 10:03 pm #24235That sounds a wiser adage Tom.
September 30, 2018 at 10:16 pm #24236Religion sells insurance. Insurance sells fear.
