Designer/Chief Science Officer and Co-founder of OpenAI.com
Interview by Stanford eCorner, “Inside OpenAI [Entire Talk]”
April 9, 2023My rough notes with some time stamps are below the 50 minute long video. (I’d say skip the last 10 minutes.)
~8 mins Ilya’s explaining how ChatGPT was trained on data…[Read more]

At any rate, my point is that there’s much more logic to remaining skeptical than to being pollyannical (which may be a neologism, but I think its meaning is obvious).
Yeah, I pretty much already knew those points. I won’t reiterate mine, while I’m hoping someone will find them interesting enough to delve into. Like really, i…[Read more]

@PB
I’m sure technological advances will continue coming and that some of those in the future would look like magic to people of today, though history has shown that the advances we think will show up seldom do so, or when they do turn up, we’re often underwhelmed. The things we didn’t anticipate at all turn out to be Earth-shattering. Things…[Read more]

What are parents good for? Lots of things, but being doctor substitutes tends not to be one of them.
Doctors should be a resource for parental decision making, not parent substitutes.
Which is why we have parents to (do?) surgeries on their kids too, right? Because caring the way a parent does is the qualification for providing…

In the future, some people will no longer age and live lives so long we can hardly image.
Who will they be? I think you know. (The uber-wealthy.) But they won’t be with us…
Of course, uber-wealthy tech entrepreneurs aren’t just buying rockets for their personal amusement. They’re founding or investing in space travel – they want to get you o…[Read more]

See why I’m a skeptic?
A thousand years is a drop in the bucket, e.g. wrt the time frame of human evolution. Recent science and tech is updating so quickly, perhaps even at an exponential pace; is it even possible to imagine how far it could go in only the next hundred years? Not to mention AI, and possibly self-replicating AI m…[Read more]

Is this “revelation” just some sort of psy op to scare the bejeezus out of our enemies? Or is it a ploy to get more money for defense?

Your take on how to handle dysphoria seems to be highly technocratic and destructive to the concept of the family.

Who cares? The doctor doesn’t need to understand their child better than they do. The doctor needs to know appropriate treatment options. The youth knows their gender identity better than parents and the doctors know better than the parents what suitable treatment options are.
If that’s the sort of argument you want to trot out, w…[Read more]

Thank you April.
when I read the thing about tattoos I identified immediately because I was the sailor who refused to get one while on liberty in The Philippines. Told everyone that I’d probably feel differently in twenty years.
You’re so right. There is no comparison between that and a fifteen year old getting medical care.
Thanks for the ver…[Read more]

While there was no Biblical Great Flood, during the ice age there were many large scale floods and the largest had a huge impact on the West, though no extinctions are attributed to it (that we know of). According to ChatGPT:
The Ice Age floods, also known as the Missoula Floods, were a series of cataclysmic floods that occurred during the…[Read more]

You’re correct about Mel being an old school Catholic largely influenced by his nut case father. I remember now, but thanks for correcting the record.
I’ll be holding my opinion on the documentary until it comes out. Normal skepticism. HOWEVER, with actual former child actors claiming they experienced pedophilia in Hollywood, it seems…[Read more]

a) I doubt if many of the parents here think parenting is irrelevant or some sort of nonessential role or that some doctor or counselor understands their child better than they do. Of course, legal intervention should logically be required for parental rights to be set aside. We parents know that what children want is often very ill-advised. For…[Read more]

Tucker Carlson is a problem for me. I hate much of his rightist pap (and you’ll find probably more than one thing to hate here) but about half the time he makes perfect sense. He’s making a lot of logical sense here: Anyone who believes Russia took out the dam and Nord Stream 2 is logically challenged.

It just keeps getting interestinger and interestinger. One this is perfectly clear: SOMBODY IS LYING!
If this is true and acquisition of such devices is this common, then Russia, China, and other governments have them and are certainly trying to reverse engineer them. This explains the national security aspect.

His personal life was a shambles and he has said any number of antisemitic, racist, and misogynistic things.
And yet, in other ways he’s a genius. I have never seen a “phoned in” Mel Gibson acting performance. Check him out as Hamlet in the 1990 movie of that name. Yes, Hamlet. Shakespeare.
He also directed the controversial but well-made movie…[Read more]
