Unseen replied to the topic Arcane or Irrelevant Topic? On Free Will, Determinism, and Quantum Physics in the forum
Artificial Intelligence 1 year, 5 months agoThe notion of free has many problems, the first one being defining it. And, of course, one of the easiest and least honest of ways of “solving” a problem is to define it away.
One of the dishonest ways of giving us free will is to define it in a way such as this: “If you can do something you want to do and no external person or force is making…[Read more]

Unseen started the topic AI may now be more artistically creative than any human in the forum Science 1 year, 5 months ago
In pursuing my interest in AI-generated visuals, I stumbled on the Lamson Youtube channel. There are many stunning videos, including quite a few more than one hour long. Some are just abstract, but many contain recognizable elements like faces, architecture, flowers, animals. Things from human real world experience.
Consider this 33 minute one.…[Read more]

You define determinism as natural law, which is consistent with its standard use in science and philosophy: every event or state of affairs results from prior states according to fixed laws.I realize I frame determinism that way but to be more precise every state of affairs is the result of its antecedents. Whatever happens is…[Read more]

Artificial Intelligence 1 year, 5 months ago@PopeBeanie – Although I don’t see how discussion of quantum level dynamics can possibly shed light on classic level physics, a new question has come to my mind that I can ask ChatGPT about: What, if any theories propose what the nature of quantum entanglement could have been on a macro scale at the big bang?
That is very similar to a ‘c…[Read more]

Sunday School 1 year, 5 months agoMost personality tests are bunk. Whenever I am an employer I always meet potential staff face to face. Using AI (non human) is a waste of time. Why employ someone you never met?

But the personality trait pages are dumb. Worse than the Myers Brigg test which is Woo.I can understand that employers want certain personality traits and qualities, like professionalism, initiative, communication skills, agreeableness, conscientiousness. But I don’t see how AI can dig those out.

Sunday School 1 year, 5 months agoI found the first 2 section Qts 1-17 easy and the Vocab section too. I collect unusual words. Jakelafort would ace it 🙂
But the personality trait pages are dumb. Worse than the Myers Brigg test which is Woo. If a HR person came up with that, they should be fired (from a cannon). If fed to an AI to shortlist people for interview then that is…[Read more]

@Unapologetic – Why didn’t YOU call the cops about your neighbor’s noise?
But then I would not have had all this fun! I am easily amused :-). Anyway, the last time (8 years ago) I went to the police station to complain about the abuse of religious privilege, the desk officer tried to hand me a small wooden crucifix and suggested I reflect on the…[Read more]

I know someone who’s met Rick Astley a few times, he’s a nice guy but very eccentric. He still has a beautiful speaking voice.

“Since ancient times, the philosophers’ secret has always been this: we know that God does not exist, or, at least, if he does, he’s utterly indifferent to our individual affairs–but we can’t let the rabble know that; it’s the fear of God, the threat of divine punishment and the promise of divine reward, that keeps in li…[Read more]

In one apartment building I lived in my apartment was on the 2nd floor just above the telecom box. Someone in the building received visitors at all hours but often she wasn’t home and her voicemail would come on, which was the complete full-length performance of Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give you up. Imagine nearly four minutes of this at 4…[Read more]

I once asked a young ex-Mormon, who I was taking to his first Atheist Ireland meeting, if he had any problems when he told his mother about no longer believing what his family believed.
No, no. Mormon mothers love their children unconditionally, was his reply. I have always remembered that, given the tales of horror I know from other ex-theists.

Ha! Two new Mormons called this evening, in the dark and cold, to see if I was interested in hearing their good news. Fresh of the boat from France. I told them I was in their black book. They made no attempt to continue the conversation. We shook hands, I wished them well and said Merry Christmas. Mormons always have good manners.
I suggested…[Read more]
