Sunday School 4 years, 5 months agoHave a great week everyone!
Sorry for delay in posting today.
The Russian navy has decided not to mess with Irish fishermen. Some Irish wit said that we would consider invading Russia if they did not but we decided not to as they have a standing army of more than 1 million soldiers with another 2 million active reservists. There is no way we…[Read more]

Even positive actions like a city hall putting up a rainbow flag (an absolute good thing) is still a reminder that gestures like that have to be made to fight a phenomena that need not exist.
That is something I was thinking about recently. One of my running routes takes me past a local junior (middle) school which has a rainbow flag flying over…[Read more]

I remember thinking that some of the animation in the Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” was inspired by the artwork in that book. I also think the Holocaust was not suitable for children but in general I agree about parental guidance on literature. Maus did win a Pulitzer prize.

A Texas lawmaker also introduced us to a new list of books to read.

@Simon – They contain a lot of nasty evil torture and wanton sick Isis-style depravity.
Are you referring to his 5 banned books or the Catholic Church? 🙂

I think the Marquis de Sade’s books are really horrible. But they’re not banned. I don’t think you can ban books.
They were banned in France until 1957. Pornography in his time was (in this context) a form of satire aimed in part at royalty and in greater part at the Catholic Church for its bigoted views on purity and chastity. I could easil…[Read more]

“It is there, where they burn books, that eventually they burn people.”
― Heinrich HeineBanning a book only amplifies its message. I am certain that many more school children will now read it. I for one will buy a copy as soon as I post this because “There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them.” – Joseph Brod…[Read more]

The Atheist Agora 4 years, 5 months agoWhen people behave in a needlessly selfish way: when they are greedy, dominant, cruel etc. then this results in a less than optimum outcome.
Or it results in the optimum outcome achievable given the circumstances.
The word “needlessly” is not necessary because people do act in selfish ways. By that I mean they act to achieve their own int…[Read more]

The Atheist Agora 4 years, 5 months agoIdeal standards are virtuous performance of one’s work in carrying out the task.
Yes, Simon but only in an ideal world. In the mundane routine of everyday life most people carry out tasks to serve their own personal interest or the interests of people they share their lives with. Those people in turn reciprocate with acts of their own. I admit a…[Read more]

Sunday School 4 years, 5 months agoI do enjoy stories like the pastor in Chattanooga. All praise to the Chili. He is certainly in an ungodly place now that he has disobeyed Leviticus 19:28 which commands that “You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you”. This is not a command by some local yokel but an order from the Lord himself. It…[Read more]

The Atheist Agora 4 years, 5 months agoIf there were two sets of circumstances, with everything the same, and something needed fixing – if one person did their job well (living up to ideal standards) then the results are very likely to be better than if the other person did their job poorly (not living up to ideal standards).
To take that to its logical conclusion; if everyone e…[Read more]

The Atheist Agora 4 years, 5 months ago@ Simon – All other things being equal, higher quality cooperation would be expected to lead to higher quality results.
In real world practical application or in theory? Could you further expand on that statement please. What “other things”?

The Atheist Agora 4 years, 5 months ago@Simon – “if we cooperate ideally, we can expect good practical, social and moral consequences. To cooperate ideally requires a conscientious and prosocial attitude”.
To me that line sounds very much like what Pangloss may have said in Candide and would have being delightful to Leibniz. You could end up with the best of all possible worlds…[Read more]

Sunday School 4 years, 5 months ago@Autumn – I think we could substitute “Canada” in the link with any of several other countries and the story would read much the same. I also think that Covid has helped by giving many of those with only one foot in a church the time and space to think independently about their beliefs. The Church can only survive by the constant iterations of the…[Read more]

The Atheist Agora 4 years, 5 months agoDown on the fronkey farm I have a few freaky friends called Freelwheelinn’ Franklin Freek and his two brothers Phineas T. The Atheist Agora 4 years, 5 months agoJust to edit my last comment on the woman who died after deliberately catching Covid. Yes, it is a bizarre story. But she was still an anti-vaxxer and after 2 years of a pandemic anyone who refuses to get vaccinated and then contracts a severe infection has also done so deliberately. These are the consequences of inaction.

The Atheist Agora 4 years, 5 months agoBut Simon it is not bizarre. I have sent the story to SAV where reading posts for 10 minutes will make you question if these people are the same species as us. They all seem to have legions of prayer warriors to call upon but their god keeps saying “No” and won’t even refund them the time they wasted beseeching him for help. Just even read this one!
