And here’s the irony…New Frontiers sent back more data on Jupiter (and had far and away the best camera ever sent there) than it will for Pluto, because near Jupiter it was able to transmit much faster, and it could therefore flush its memory buffer and refill it a few times. Pluto is roughly seven times as far away as Jupiter (the ratio is…[Read more]

To Do or not To Do 10 years, 10 months agoI am much more sympathetic to outing a politician than a preacher, because only the politician can be an agent of force (as you touched on). But it had better be a politician that really goes against the group he’s fighting (gays, atheists, whatever). Occasional pandering speeches is one thing, I’ve never known a politician who didn’t…[Read more]

I did NOT claim that the “study references non-murders only.” Furthermore the diagram doesn’t make any such claim either. It appears that you don’t know how to read a Venn (or Euler) diagram.
Set A: All Firearms Related Deaths. The circle on the left. This is what the study addressed, and they painstakingly list all the codes and categories…[Read more]

You probably COULD argue with Bruce Lee about stuff like that, and he’d be civil.
Argue with him over the ownership of his wallet, on the other hand, and you’ll find yourself stuffed into a trash can you didn’t realize was big enough to hold you.

Much has been made of the fact that over the past fifty years, we’ve explored all of the “classical” planets. That just happens to cover my lifespan neatly. When I was a kid, Pluto was a white dot on a star photograph, with an arrow pointing to it (and another dot, on a photo immediately to the right). It has been decades (1989) since we got…[Read more]

Yes, you’ve made it easy.
You continue to erroneously assert that a study showing a relationship between firearms ownership and firearms related deaths has something conclusive to say about a relationship between firearms ownership and the rate of any and all murders, excluding non-murder deaths by firearm, and including murders…[Read more]

Sunday School 10 years, 10 months agoThe favorite button shows up on the activity listing, but not when you look at all posts under a topic (i.e., go to the topic). (I was wondering why I thought I remembered seeing it even though I couldn’t at other times. Now I know.)

My view of religion is that it’s a dictatorship, mass docile conformity, patently false and morally bankrupt. Nothing during my school years or since has ever remotely changed my opinion about this and I’m fascinated how otherwise intelligent people get sucked into it. That’s my primary reason for lurking on this forum, to disco…

I do hope you are able to restore your detente.
Unfortunately, Christians often feel commanded to convert others, in fact, they express horror at the thought of anyone going to hell, and will do a lot to try to prevent it.
He may be in a state of mind where he thinks it’s just as urgent to convert you, as you would think it was to put out the…[Read more]

@Unseen I nodded when I saw this just now…
Then I realized the blue bars are “homicides by firearm” for the countries. In other words this flies in the face of what his study actually claims (as opposed to what he has insisted it proves, instead)… unless I am misunderstanding the definition of “homicide.”

Atheist Zone 10 years, 10 months agoUmar, Two things:
1) I found out I can upload to the media library on my (dormant) blog (letreasonreign.wordpress.com) and reference them here. That’s an alternative to generic photo uploading sites (that oftentimes delete your photos after a while, resulting in a dead link here).
2) If you do go for a plugin, i suggest you ensure it doesn’t…[Read more]

Even aside from the ownership rates (which can be difficult to pin down, as I mentioned quite some time ago) this chart shows the level of gun restrictions doesn’t have much to do with homicide rates either.
In Brazil, it’s generally illegal to carry a gun outside the home (if Wikipedia is to be believed)–so if there’s any correlation…[Read more]

What I was trying to reference when I talked about an attacker coming up behind you is the case where, say, someone comes up behind you while you’re at an ATM; if you have access to a knife it’s a simple matter to stab backwards. He’s making the mistake of assuming you’re defenseless. and, if you had either nothing or a gun in a side holster…[Read more]

I’d like an answer to this too. The old site let you upload photos.
I can, if necessary, upload the photo to my blog, then reference it here (assuming wordpress will let me do so without my actually putting it in a post), but others don’t have that option.

The study claims to have found a link between firearms ownership rates and “firearm-related death,” not the aggregate murder rate.
And that is why it refutes Unseen’s claim that there is no “NO RELATION WHATSOEVER between the rate of gun ownership and the murder rate”.
You’re not suggesting that “firearm related deaths”…
