ParticipantThe other day on Farcebook I ran into a pic of someone holding a sign that said “Diversity is code for white genocide.” It boggles my mind that anyone could believe and/or promulgate such bullshit. Sweet Jesus is hate speech exactly like ‘diversity’ is code for white genocide.

ParticipantThe bedrock reality beneath all the faux pearl clutching and non-debates is the fact that sale of lethal weapons, from Saturday night specials to nuclear devices, is one of the most lucrative enterprises known to humankind. The ultimate explanation was given by Bob Dylan long ago: “We’re idiots babe. It’s a wonder we can even feed ourselves.”

Participant@Bellen – Neil Carter wrote a great rebuttal to Matt Walsh’s idiotic yoga is demonic rant. He makes an excellent point therein:
Most of all, they [churches] need you to be uncomfortable in your own skin. It’s imperative, because if you feel fine the way you are, you won’t buy what they’re selling. I believe that is a huge part of why the church feels threatened by calming, soothing, centering exercises that have nothing explicitly to do with Jesus.
He also provided this helpful flowchart to help determine whether one should read Matt Walsh’s screeds:

ParticipantThere’s more cheery news, courtesy CNN:
CDC to slash global epidemic prevention programs in 39 of 49 countries
(CNN) The former chief of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the decision to cut 80% of its epidemic prevention activities overseas could pose a grave danger to the United States because it “would significantly increase the chance an epidemic will spread without our knowledge and endanger lives in our country and around the world.”What could go wrong?

ParticipantReg —
Good article on propagandists’ tricks. Unfortunately being a “merchant of doubt” (along with manufacturing lethal weapons and peddling religion) is one of the most profitable undertakings known to mankind. Here’s a particularly insidious example of a dirty propagandist trick:
Abortion Foes Hijack Racial Justice: This ‘Black Genocide’ Argument Is Particularly Dangerous[Alternet]
Anti-abortion activists are hijacking the racial justice movement in a craven effort to restrict the reproductive freedom of black women. It’s insulting and cynical and, if the reproductive rights movement isn’t careful, it just might work.A recently released short documentary explores this disturbing trend, which has zeroed in on the black community with a false but darkly resonant message: Abortion is leading to black genocide.

ParticipantOf course Chomsky’s right. It’s a magician’s trick of distraction. The conservative reich is realizing their every wet dream while the media freak out over Dolt 45.

ParticipantYes – one day AI could regard us in much the same way as we regard algae. (Except we won’t be playing a significant role in the food chain.)

ParticipantIt’s not at all unreasonable to think that evolution is melding biology with technology. It doesn’t have a purpose, but AI could be the next stage in wherever it’s headed. Human creations, as ghastly as many of them are, literally come “out of nature” just as much as stars, galaxies, and biotic beings.

ParticipantReading Martin Amis’s book Time’s Arrow. Freakiest novel I’ve ever read, or probably ever will.

Participant@Bellen – > How do you believe two different things at once? Is that normal? I think I’m breaking from reality.
On the other hand, maybe Aleister Crowley was right:
“Balance every thought with its opposition. Because the marriage of them is the destruction of illusion.”

Participant@Reg – thanks so much for posting Christopher’s presentation. Painfully sad but awesomely inspiring. Dawkins’ intro was amazing as well. (Also a fabulous example of something that gives you goosebumps.)

Participant@JBO – Ok, so maybe everybody doesn’t like her, but everybody likes her better than Dolt 45. (Everybody you’d want to be at a party with anyway)

Participant@ Robert – true, she does push a lot of woo. As a friend suggested, Dr. Oz for Surgeon General, anyone? I doubt they’ll be using the smooching Harvey pic on any campaign lit.

ParticipantI’ve never been a fan or even watched her show, but if we’re in the age of celebrity pols she’d be vastly better than Mr. Art of the Tweet. She’s got major drawing power, and the D’s don’t have anyone else remotely charismatic or compelling in the wings. Since it won’t be Al Franken, I’d go for Oprah.
