While the CDC was dishing out questionable (guesses?), wrong, and bad advice, they were actively working to stifle free and open discussion of the Covid response:
This video replaces another one I had put up which was far too long for most people to watch, so if you’re confused, this is why.

February 6, 2023 at 5:56 pm #46782Wow, you guys have really degenerated quite a bit, eh? And here I thought atheists were supposed to be rational sorts.
Kudos to @robert for trying, but trying to reason with anti-mask, anti-vax, anti-public health folks who’ve been sucking down Russian propaganda is just a never-ending Gish Gallop. One is left trying to explain all of microbiology and population statistics in order to counter ever new barrages of highly emotive BS.
I can see where the whole conspiracy theory thing about being the Special People who are “in the know” might appeal to the anti-establishment/deconstructionist thing that goes on in Modern Atheism. But sheesh!

February 6, 2023 at 6:12 pm #46783Enco, I am waiting for something substantive. Anything at all…
You reference the common good. And yet you cite the Nazis as being advocates. So mythology of the pure Aryan to the exclusion of all others? Not only exclusion but extinction of the reviled. That for you represents the common good? That is a very selective good and even then a forseeable demise caused by their ideology.
Assuming arguendo the National Socialist party shares my disdain for unfettered, unregulated, laissez faire free market capitalism; it does not follow that all who oppose such an economy/culture will follow suit. USA for instances has a myriad of regulations that inhibit the free market. Slavery is illegal here too. Such a glaring nonsequitur that it is kind of sad to have to point that out to you.
You have however hit on a key concept. Consequences. Yes, in my estimation one must examine the probable/potential consequences of a policy. I think implicitly even you have done so. You have not defended free markets when it comes to markets for sex slaves, slaves, dangerous weapons. It must be that you perceive the consequences as undesirable. You don’t have to be a consequentialist/utilitarian to know that consequences of a policy have to factor into the equation. Implementing an economy that is truly free would have such disastrous consequences.
I have not gone to any strawmen. I have looked to our history. That is all. Oh, and given evidence that there is still a ready market for slavery. Do you, Enco, wish to open that door?
February 6, 2023 at 6:17 pm #46785Dr Bob.
Rumors of your demise were on the rise. Now he decries the lies. But the biggest lie you let fly. Tell us why.
February 6, 2023 at 6:33 pm #46788DrBob,
Greetings, DrBob. Sorry if you caught us in a bad moment. 😁
Davis, I’ll gladly reply later, and Jake, for now at least, I’ll maybe dignify you with a response later.
February 7, 2023 at 12:58 am #46801Wow, you guys have really degenerated quite a bit, eh? And here I thought atheists were supposed to be rational sorts.
Groan. Nothing changes. Dr. Bob…perhaps you could clear up the whole story of you being a professor which passed away?
February 13, 2023 at 2:43 am #46892I don’t think I’ve passed away… not quite yet anyway. Happily fully vaccinated and boosted to try to keep it that way!
I do think that the COVID pandemic will be an abject lesson for the next 50 years on how not to do scientific communication with the public. Sadly, part of that is because the public turns out to be far more ignorant than we thought.
February 13, 2023 at 3:26 am #46895Should the Federal Government be putting its thumb on the scale of scientific debate? Obviously not. That would be outrageous, right? Well, is it any better if the Feds work behind the scenes to put their thumb on scientific debate in collusion with Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, and even the search engines? If it was okay, and they knew it, they’d do it in the open.
That comedian/pundit (fundit?) Jimmy Dore is back to expose what was uncovered last week in the House hearings on Twitter. Now, of course the Republicans want to prove that Twitter worked against conservatives (it looks like it did) but this part of the hearing was about how Twitter became a government patsy in terms of stifling Covid dissent even when it came from authoritative quarters.
February 14, 2023 at 12:57 am #46914Okay Dr. Bob that is weird because Simon was convinced you were a professor in a University who we know to have passed away. Many members offered their condolences. So either you have claimed to be someone you are not, or Simon must have misunderstood something. If it is the first, that is a little deranged and you owe everyone an apology for lying and also making them think you died. If it is the second, then that is a very misfortunate understanding.
February 14, 2023 at 6:58 am #46917Hi @davis… OK, I didn’t really get that. Who did Simon think I was? I suppose I appreciate the condolences. I’m sure I’ll need them some day.
Tell me, what happened to Unseen? He seems to have been replaced by a Republican doppleganger. Now he thinks that scientific debate happens on YouTube and Twitter (and Lord help us, Facebook!).
February 14, 2023 at 7:21 am #46918A couple of years ago, William Lane Craig said that a Dr Bob, one of his favourite theology professors, had passed away.

I’m a “Republican doppelganger” (note the proper spelling) who is also a socialist fan of Bernie Sanders, supports unions, and hates the way the U.S. kowtows to the military-industrial complex.
I have a bit of advice. Instead of seeing that what I present runs counter to your prejudices and so you don’t consider it, you might try following the logic. I present a lot of Jimmy Dore (himself a self-described “pot smoking socialist”) because he presents documentation along with his quips and jabs.
The CDC has a history of presenting misinformation (all the flip-flops) and actively organizing the suppression of contrarian voices. PhD’s and MD’s who have their doubts and reservations are not nut job vaccine deniers. True vaccine deniers and antimaskers don’t base their doubts on evidence and studies. PhD’s and MD’s do.
You should be asking what’s happened to the Democrats which used to be the antiwar party but lately seems to vie with the Republicans to see who can more enthusiastically funnel the nation’s treasure to the Defense establishment and military-industrial complex. Money that could be used to make the average American’s life better, safer, and healthier.
You made fun of Bjorn Lomborg in a knee-jerk fashion also. Do your qualifications rival his? Have you presented a refutation of his logic? I haven’t seen it. Can you even recite his views and the support he offers for them? If not, what are you basing your criticism on. I suspect it’s that he’s different. He doesn’t sound like Al Gore.
I see people on The Old Left simply parroting what they’re told by the CDC, The White House Press Secretary, or the retired military “experts” who appear on CNN and MSNBC.
No, I’m not right wing. I have voted Democratic in every presidential election, but I’m so discouraged by the party nowadays that I’ll consider voting third party next time. A party further to the left than the current Democratic Party. They have become an Old Boys and Girls Network that nominates presidential candidates according to a patronage system. Who’s been loyal, doesn’t rock the boat, and is next in line? Biden is too old and out of it to be President again. And yet, it’s looking they’ll ignore the 60% of their own constituency who don’t want Biden to run again.
Right wing? Don’t make me laugh. Open your eyes and look around.

February 14, 2023 at 3:39 pm #46922Unseen thinks watching right wing shill videos is “doing research”. He never looks for real data to counter the claims. How come he never posts any of that?
Here you go. Liberal states like Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Oregon did so well with covid deaths per capita compared to the “lets this play out naturally, by god” states like Arizona, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and West Virginia…..had them dropping like flies. Death rates twice as high. Gee, I wonder why that is? I wonder why Dore can’t just look that up? That would take some effort to look actual data and well just like the election that data can’t be trusted anyways.

So, there are studies you like and think are reliable, but does that justify suppressing free discussion of dissenting views, even by qualified experts?
But maybe it’s okay for the government to collude with social media, the mainstream news media, and search engines to hide dissent(?). Maybe not as unsubtly as China might (a softer, gentler propaganda operation, you might say) but effectively, as the hearings being held to grill the Twitter censors are revealing. Similar revelations came out of the opening of the Facebook Files (emails between the CDC and Facebook censors).
Are you sure body counts are accurate and reliable? Then, why is there a debate among experts raging as to whether Covid deaths were overcounted, meaning many deaths with Covid being wrongly counted as deaths from Covid?
Anyway, Robert, where do you stand? Is it okay to suppress dissent and free discussion, even on the academic level, to enforce the official view merely because it is the official position? Does thinking it’s right justify the government hijacking the discussion, when the dissenters are not harebrained morons but have the credentials to be taken seriously?
How easily we forget what makes America stand out from the crowd. Or, rather, what used to until Covid came along. We were once the land where our #1 right, the one that guarantees the rest, is our free speech.
Finally, let’s go over the history of the CDC and the “truth” they tried to enforce, until it became obvious they were misinforming us:
It’s no worse than the flu.
Washing hands and surfaces are the most-important preventions.
No need for masking.
Once vaccinated, you can’t spread it.
Once vaccinated, you can’t get it.
Once you get it, you can’t get it again.
Rural communities don’t have to worry.
Young people don’t have to worry.-

Dr. Bob. You are a snake of a troll. I am not going to help to talk trash about a member of this community. While I disagree with some of the things he has said recently, I wouldn’t characterise him in a negative way like you seem to take pleasure out of. Since you’ve arrived, you’ve spoken disparagingly about this site at least twice, ridiculed multiple members, poked and prodded us with easily recognisable forms of trolling and reeked of bad faith. While I would have loved to have seen a different side of you, coming in good faith, to provide challenging debate…it hasn’t happened. I don’t understand why you behave like this.
