Random Posts 2 years, 9 months agoWhat happens when a space suit’s air pressure drops to zero? As one who went to commercial dive school and was once a certified scuba instructor, this breathable oxygen and air pressure is interesting to me, and I never would have guessed the outcome of the test shown in the video below.
As an aside, the first astronaut and cosmonaut deaths were…[Read more]

Random Posts 4 years, 6 months agoPope, i heard that same idea in re to the rapid population of a galaxy from Neil Tyson on a Sam Harris podcast. The notion of a free market of ideas is nonsense but the notion of a rubber is glue, bounces off of me and sticks to you market is somewhat apt.

Random Posts 4 years, 6 months agoI once had a client i represented in the sale of her home. She called me all stressed the day before the closing. She was a hoarder and apparently procrastinator cuz her shit was knee deep and then some. Of course the seller has a legal duty to turn over the property in broom clean condition. Anyways i said my afternoon was clear and volunteered…[Read more]

Random Posts 4 years, 6 months agoGood to hear this positive news from you Pope Beanie (Your Holiness). It was only afterwards when we were chatting that I mentioned I was in your area but at the time I did not know you lived there and 5 days earlier I did not even know I was going to America. It was a spur of the moment decision based on a potential business venture that had time…[Read more]

Random Posts 4 years, 6 months agoCalifornia vs Covid, and myself vs VA Covid Vax Proof

Random Posts 4 years, 6 months agoUnlike TA, AZ’s kinda weak when it comes to giving users their own blog page. I came here today to start a group for blogging, where people can create their own personal topic (e.g. “PopeBeanie’s Blog”), but now I’m asking what people might prefer. This random posts forum might even be a good place to do this?
Or, maybe we should have a more…[Read more]

Random Posts 4 years, 6 months agoWhen you first see a person do you form an opinion of their intelligence or personality just by appearance? Is your impression typically accurate? Does your impression typically gibe with racial, ethnic or gender stereotypes? If the stereotype and your impression based on appearance is synergistic do you scold yourself and subtract a bit?

I think stereotyping is an essential aspect of our daily thinking. We call it stereotyping when we disapprove of it, but what’s the difference between a general concept (a generalization) and a stereotype? Between an assumption based on experience and a stereotype? Not all nurses are female, but most are. Is that a stereotype or a simple…

All stereotypes are generalizations. Not all generalizations are stereotypes. In most cases stereotypes are oversimplifications even if there is a grain of validity. They often have contain discriminatory or prejudicial notions and are held in common by large numbers and go without questioning like religious cant. They’re also transmitted…

Like I said: “We call it stereotyping when we disapprove of it.” For those in the know, the everyday form of reasoning isn’t induction and it’s certainly not deduction. It’s abduction, which is just a fancy philosophical/logical word for what we normally call common sense. Common sense is as unreliable as it is unavoidable. We can’t trust it…
-
Can’t go along with notion that generalizations and stereotypes are one and same. All stereotypes are generalization but not all generalizations are stereotypes. While it is true in certain cases that we call it stereotype when we disapprove it is also true that a stereotype does not depend on our assessment of it. Stereotypes have…
-
We never say “I’m stereotyping.” We do say “He/she/they is/are stereotyping.” Hence, the disapproval aspect. When was the last time you said “I’m stereotyping”?
-
I have called myself out for stereotyping. I’ve heard others call themselves out. Admittedly it may be unusual. Really not sure. But i take your point.
However it does not change the clear delineation between generalizations without stereotypes and the generalizations that are stereotypes.
My hunch is that stereotypes transmitted and…

Somehow the link to your last comment on stereotyping is dead, so you’ll have to make a mental note that this belongs after the “I have called myself out for stereotyping.” My only comment is that if you think about it, this quote proves my point, that it’s stereotyping when we disapprove of it.

Random Posts 4 years, 7 months agoThe Dr. Laura was an early Internet hit. I sometimes use lines from it when Christian apologists want to set me straight about how Leviticus should not be taken literally. Of course they are a different breed to the Christian apologists that insist I take Leviticus literally as their god intended. Quick, find me a theologian!

“Dear Dr. Laura?” You mean “Dr.” Laura Shit-Slinger? Don’t tell me that witch is still around and on the air.
(I always got a big laugh out of how talk show host Neal Boortz called her Cruella DeVille! 😁😆😅🤣)

Random Posts 4 years, 7 months agoAnd now there is shit coming out about dogs being cured of cancer, helped with pain, depression and anxiety using marijuana. It is a miracle drug!
But it is also supposed to be toxic for dogs in doses too high. And dogs are supposed to have more cannabinoid receptors so they get high as monkeys on fermenting fruit in a famine.
