I define “right” as “when you act, each person affected by your actions is to receive the maximum benefit and minimum harm available to them”.

How does this (if it does) differ from utilitarian philosophy?

Probably an antiquated and personal definition of terms here, but I’ve always understood “morals” to be the rules that are imposed on you and “ethics” to be the rules that you impose on yourself.  So by that understanding, I agree that atheists have no morals.  They may, however, have a set of ethics.

Personally, I have been told, by someone who knew Me very well, that I have no ethics.  I agree with him in full.  Actually his full statement was that I had no ethics, I only had aesthetics.  Again, agreed with in full.

Will it happen in our lifetime?

Hopefully not.  I agree with many of the posts in the original conversation that expressed the opinion that such a button should not be used. I agree with that opinion in principle, though I think that its use on certain US political leaders could be tempting.

I am of the opinion that the *content* of posts is more important than making them look PRETTY.  I don’t mind the format personally, as I often find that an overabundance of formatting options can be more of a hindrance than a help.  YMMV, of course.

People would look at sacred buildings and percieve them just as we do now with Roman and Greek Ruins or the Pyramids or Mayan temples.

Yet We are aware that those buildings were built by, for the most part, theists of some flavour or another.  If I don’t remember ever being a theist and nobody else remembers ever being a theist but there are clearly buildings build in the last few decades that express a belief in a god — and perhaps more importantly records of , say, televangelists or prominent politicians expressing theistic views — how would those be explained?

Sorry, just musing on what I consider to be a very interesting idea that I’m sorry I missed.  And thinking that that this concept could make for some very interesting science fiction.  Don’t worry, davis, I’ll credit your idea as the inspiration when I get published. 🙂

I know this thread has been dead for nearly two years, but I can’t help but wonder why nobody brought up the obvious (to Me) question: If the button removes belief in God, and the memory of belief in God … how do you think that people would explain all the Bibles and Qurans and churches and temples and such?  And what would the paid clergy think that they had been doing all that time, and what would they do for a living now?

Heya Pope!  No, there were no format buttons, but that’s because I wasn’t in Forum mode I guess, I was just typing what seems to be an “update” to a thread.  Just have to get used to how to get where I want to be!

And btw, for anyone who doesn’t like the bright white background, I found (about half an hour ago) an addon for Firefox that totally fixes that.  It’s called (very appropriately, if unimaginatively) “Dark background & light text.”  Fully customizable and actually makes the pages look a little like I remember TA looking.  Makes My eyes a lot happier too, on this site and most other sites I’ve visited since installing it.  Only for Firefox, though I think I saw that there was a version for Chrome as well.  (Though why someone would voluntarily use Chrome is beyond My understanding.  Of course I hear of a lot of people who use Windows 10 too.) ;-P

Heya!  Just coming here after a while away from TA (I think, time is such a hassle to keep track of).  If it’s hard to understand the tabs at the top of the message box (ul, ol, li, etc.) just make sure that you’ve got the “Visual” selected in the upper right corner instead of “Text.”  Makes it a lot more intuitive AND will explain what those pictures mean if you hover over them.

Now, I did check out the profile thing but the only thing I saw there was a space for ‘name.’  (Also uploaded profile and cover images, of course).  Where is the age?  (And whatever else there might be?)  Since I’m actually young enough to put My correct birth year in there, that makes Me feel special.  (Just turned 50, btw.)

I actually think I like this site.  Maybe I don’t remember TA that well though, and I just came here a few hours ago, so I might be in for a learning experience.  One complaint that I will agree with, though, is the bright white background; My eyes are very light-sensitive and this screen actually hurts to look at too much.  I might have to wear sunglasses to do a lot of posting.

Anyhow, glad to be back, hoping to get to some actual philosophical discussion rather than web design issues.

Hello everyone, and Welcome (or since I’m new here, welcome to Me, I guess).  I was a member of some forum or another some five or six years ago (that eventually became this forum after I left) then dropped away for whatever reason.  I was just doing an Internet search on My name and found some of those old discussions, and realized that I had several interesting discussions there.  I haven’t had many such discussions since then and decided to give it another shot.

I’ve been having some discussions with some people on Facebook but it’s just … not the same.  Less focused discussions, more trolls, a plethora of unrelated content, and just a lot of LCD’s.  Here’s hoping the people here can bring Me a bit of hope for intelligent life on Earth.
