All the denominations exists in the evil spirit of strife.  They all have to find something that looks clever to keep their followers paying them for giving them something clever by which to “debunk” the others.   That is why I didn’t even speak about it.  Except giving the Truth.  We have only One God.  He was always YHWH and still is.  Jesus is His Word.  And He is Spirit or The Holy Spirit.   He created us in His Image in order for us to know Him.  That is what is important to Him.  For us to see we are just like Him.  He is a Person like us.  Not something “strange”.  Here is a nice video on it.  It is the Truth from God because it “touches all” who desires to know the Truth.   It is not a “striving argument” for something.  Just the Truth to enjoy by all.

I see no Word of God which Edifies anyone in it.  Can you show us where it is, Brother?

As the Roman empire and her gods began failing, Paul’s Jesus cult was the easy choice for Jews and Pagans alike, all across the empire. The Hebrew religion was very unpopular after the Jewish uprising and destruction of their required temple. And well, becoming a Jew meant the sawing off pecker-parts and all the dietary restrictions. So sure, keep the old Jewish scriptures as a backdrop but rehash it to make it easy to practice for everyone. Of course, Islam is just a much-later break-away Christian cult that replaces Jesus with a local Mo guy.

Like Reg says…it is the quest for immortality and fear of death that works behind the scenes. Wanting to reunite with loved ones in the clouds.  There is also the yearning for eternal justice via judgment day that is promised. Vengeance to the ones who wronged them.

How can reality and rationality compete with all that? Note that most theists are happy to take full advantage of the bounties of science and medicine while they disregard all that knowledge and methodology used to achieve it for fairy tales in a millisecond.

Robert, that explains the emotional attachment but how do you get yourself to ardently wholeheartedly and without a shred of doubt to believe the most transparent crap? We use words like compartmentalize and dichotomize but it is kind of hollow.

I hope some day neurologists explain the ‘mechanics’ of indoctrination and unshakeable belief. And once it is scientifically demonstrable and lets say mechanistic i dare say it won’t shake the belief of the severely deluded.

Evolution has preconditioned apes to believe without evidence. The skeptic walking through a forest of predators with a spear, can’t afford to wonder about every noise from the bush that they hear. And that ape who believes he has a guardian at call may run just a bit faster. It’s all about fast reaction times and emotional impulses kicked off by fear. These were the survivors. Sure, the rare pensive ape might get caught (while deep in thought) and become a meal, but just enough rational brainpower survived to advance the species along. The bell-curve is peaky, the right-side tails off fast.

The controllers of religion know all too well how to harness those instincts.

Recently I have been considering religion from a cultural viewpoint. Most people start life with the same cognitive machinery in their skulls. But the development of inherited intelligence and critical thinking skills are dependent on how “the village” views the importance of education. In the societies with the highest level of personal freedoms and social justice and equity, levels of atheism are increasing steadily.

Countries where societies are strangled by religion tend to view intelligence and education with disdain. To survive, religion needs to be allowed to continually inject its dogmas and traditions into the local culture. When it loses its cultural support, people start to realize that religion is not a necessity. Secularism always leads to an improvement in societal norms and values.

When people gain the ability to think freely, they come to understand that religion is not the default natural position that the old culture posited. Atheism is the natural position.

Atheism is the more mature position to hold (not that it is really a choice). The atheist (as a free thinker) has honestly grappled with the question about the inevitability of his\her own mortality and has come to accept the conclusion that “I have only one life and my death is the end of my existence”.

The theist still calls out for his\her Daddy and hopes for and expects an eternal reward for believing “My God is real”. The religious person holds beliefs that they are in communication with the Creator of the Universe, that they are constantly monitored and that their demise will make them immortal, just like the god they believe in. This is intellectually immature. I do acknowledge there are more nuanced reasons why people adhere to faith beyond their fear of death, such as a sense of community, moral guidance, or existential comfort. But mostly I see these communities as insular and intolerant of the ‘other’, their moral guidance as rigid and the comfort given as false.

Most religious people would stop believing in their god(s) tomorrow if Science discovered a senolytic drug (thanks Jakelafort) to allow us to live to 500. Fear of death is the main reason they continue to believe.

I could expand on the idea that atheism is not a “choice” but a natural outcome of free thinking. This aligns with cognitive science research suggesting that belief systems often emerge unconsciously. But we all get that idea here.  I try not to hold any beliefs and if I catch myself holding one, I challenge it.

Religious people think that they made a conscious decision to believe in their god(s). No, they just came to believe it over time, via cultural immersion or small group indoctrination. This is why they are constantly engaged in apologetics. It’s all about confirmation bias and group polarization. Don’t challenge the consensus or you will be labelled a heretic and an outcast from your society!! (I have a few of those t-shirts!).

I guess I could sound less harsh towards theists that might read this critique, but I would be dishonest to do so.  Maybe if you honestly ask yourself “Do I really believe that I will become an immortal and be conscious of my own existence in 47 million years’ time” you might like to let us know why you think that is an intellectually mature position to hold.
