Simon PayntonParticipantI’m sure I would agree with the social justice agenda, and the ways in which they would like things to change. But I think that the way they try and achieve it can sometimes be deeply silly, and exclusionary of other viewpoints.
However, like many avant-garde movements, some of the ideas can end up filtering into the mainstream.

Reg the Fronkey FarmerModeratorI am playing Fry Cry 5 on the PS4. The photo above reminds me of the “peggies” or cult members of Eden’s Gate that I am out to save the world from. Somebody’s got to do it!

Reg the Fronkey FarmerModeratorI think the right is winning “bigly” in a lot of places. I spend time most years in PCB in Fl. and short-term vacation rentals are open again. Hardly anyone is following safety protocols anymore because “freedom”. Then they all go to church together.
In fairness, restaurants are only using 50% of their seating and tourists are not back fully yet.

UnseenParticipantHoly crap, Unseen.
To make matters worse, there is a third faction, loosely aligned with the AntiFas, calling themselves anarchists. These aren’t the small-government free trade libertarian leave-us-alone anarchists, these are the violent bomb-throwing, fire-starting, breaking store windows anarchists. Unfortunately, they run with AntiFas and AntiFas get painted with that brush, even as much as most AntiFas would like them to go away.

PopeBeanieModeratorI spend time most years in PCB in Fl.
Do you mean PBC in FL? If so, I grew up (mostly) there, in Palm Beach County. I didn’t see much bigly there forty five years ago, but saw some near the armpit states (north-east Gulf of Mexico area). I remember driving through there with a CB radio and listening to some rednecks harassing and threatening a black guy, trying to get him to say where he was.
In another few weeks or so we should see some illuminating statistics on the “freedom” vs Shelter In Place (SIP) policies and behaviors.
Now ( @Davis) I’m feeling offended practically every day here at home during covid angst, hearing the freedom folks regularly use epithets like SJW, libtards, use “progressives” as a bad word, and more. They do like to trigger us, perhaps because they’re in the minority in an area here that’s mostly progressive, and have no other place to scream and yell. (I mean, really, why do they even live in California? But then again, a co-worker in a conservative area in FL once told me that liberals are mentally ill. Pretty sure it came straight from a FOX commentator.)
So I take a moment to get over their (often mean-spirited tone) jabs, grow some thicker skin, try to respond without insulting-in-kind, and also try to write it to people who will actually listen, before the triggered libtards (yes, they actually exist here) respond with their own brand of insecurities and vitriol.
This is especially aggravating every time I hear one of those freedom idiots (who, btw don’t care as much about the “promote the general welfare” part of the constitution) say something like “masks don’t work” (and “so why should Trump wear one?”), “the flu kills people every year, so what’s the big deal?”, “there’s no treatment or vaccine so let’s just get this over with, let the vulnerable die (they all have underlying conditions to start with)”, and “then we’ll all be fine”.
I swear, it’s scary how many of them are out there, and how easily triggered they are by any criticism (real or imagined) of Trump.
I digressed.
I still remember being accused of sounding post-modernist. Uneducated fully about it, I likely knee-jerk responded and sounded like an idiot. Anyway, I understand better how some of the Trumpers feel about being told they sound racists. As @Robert points out, (my loose paraphrase) Trumpers came out of the closet to vote for their hero who came to support the downtrodden like themselves.
I haven’t read much on post-modernism (other than in Art History class), but I believe that the current American Majority vs Trump political identity feud is more serious… perhaps even an existential crisis. I hope the fucker catches covid soon, and dies in ICU, sloooowly.
That’s how triggered I am! And please give him all the hydroxychloroquine he wants.
That’s a thing now, responding to other Americans like they’re enemies, or just unAmerican. (Well, Nationalists use that unAmerican charge much more than I do.)

Reg the Fronkey FarmerModeratorSorry Your Holiness, I mean Panama City Beach. This stupidity happened just by where I stay. However I seldom see a crowded beach as I only go there for a week around Thanksgiving. The rest of the time I stay in Atlanta.

DavisParticipantI’ve seen several shows that really take digs at Floriday (most notably Family Guy and Brooklyn Nine Nine) and on a few sites I’ve seen people encouraging you to either name a town in Florida and do a news search and see how much white-trash-crime goes on there. I have to guess that there is a lot of hyperbole but the kind of insults are along the lines of “the trash can of America”. This must be an extreme reaction. After all, when both those shows make fun of Canada…the jokes literally make no sense. Is there a hint of truth to this?

Being the 3rd most populated state, Florida is a bit like a small country with it’s own regions that differ significantly. The diversity is a wide spectrum. Throw in 90F degrees and 100% humidity, some alligators, hurricanes and mosquitos and there is no telling what could and does happen, LOL.

Reg the Fronkey FarmerModeratorI drive from Atlanta to Panama City in Florida. I cover about 310 miles including a straight drive down through Alabama. If I was to drive from Panama City to Orlando I would cover about 360 miles and still only be in northern half of Florida.

UnseenParticipantRiots all across the United States. Right wing news and opinion sources will depict it as those crazy blacks can’t control their criminal impulses, but Portland is one of the whitest cities in America, yet we had a full-blown riot going on last night. It’s those anarchists who glom on to any protest and then proceed to break windows, set cars and stores on fire, steal merchandise, etc.
If you look at the protesters, they aren’t primarily characterized by being black but by being young. It’s the young who are fed up just as much as the blacks are, who have had it “up to here” with living in a country not just where what happened to Mr. Floyd can happen, but where everything from minor indignities to outright murder happen to black folks day in and day out, and they don’t want to live in that particular country.
Here’s four plus hours of how it went here last night. I know that’s long. Just drop in it randomly, especially Tonight there’s an 8 p.m. curfew.

Simon PayntonParticipantI’m sure it’s possible to have neo-Marxists who are also post-modernists. If Marxism is distinct and non-overlapping with post-modernism – well neo-Marxism can take what it wants from Marxism, in a post-modern way.
June 6, 2020 at 6:25 pm #31710
DavisParticipantNo Simon. Anyone who says they are a post-modern marxist is stupid, self-contradictory and is spouting nonsense. It’s like being a God-loving atheist. You cannot be a post-modernist marxist. Jordon Peterson was just making up stupid shit (or pointing to a small handful of werid outliers) so he could overgeneralize and straw-man a broad spectrum of liberal minded people and then criticize them through non-existent qualities. How can a relativist propose a rational analysis of political and economic structures and suggest the best response to it. It makes NO sense in NO universe. Peterson is such an intellectual ass.

Simon PayntonParticipantPost-modern neo-marxist. It makes sense to treat marxism in a post-modernist way, to take what one wants from it.
It’s all very well to say that something “shouldn’t” exist on paper, but it does in real life.
June 7, 2020 at 12:55 pm #31728
DavisParticipantNo Simon. If you “take something” from Marxism from a post-modernist perspective then you are picking and choosing from Marxism. Not BEING A MARXIST. As atheists we can take the few tidbits in the bible that are of use and make something out of it from our atheist perspectives. That doesn’t make us atheist-God-believers. That’s absurd. Just as post-modernists who take some juicy tidbits from marxist don’t become Marxists. To be a Marxist means giving up post-modernist relativism. You cannot be both. Get that in your head. Zheesh
